I am going to make a general assumption here – everyone knows what a tampon is and what it is used for. To make it crystal clear for all those reading this – a tampon is a cotton and rayon blended feminine product that is inserted into the vaginal cavity to absorb menstrual blood when a female is having her cycle. There, that is about as cut and dry as it gets where tampons are concerned. Unless you are into the kinkier things in life I doubt anyone really enjoys getting their period – that is unless you might think you are pregnant – then you’ll do that “happy dance” in the bathroom and feel elated for a few minutes until you come down off the high and realize that you have one tampon left. HA! If you would have stocked up last month or bought that mega size 40 count box you wouldn’t have to bust a move to the store for more. But that’s neither here nor there; picking out the tampon that works best for you isn’t something to be taken lightly. If you’ve never worn tampons the whole experience can be a bit nerve racking – you have sizes to consider, if you want the multi pack, the various scents that they come in … it’s enough to make your head spin.

Tampax Tampons, Biodegradable Applicator, Super Absorbency

These aren’t the biggest most absorbent tampon from Tampax but they are second in line; the super absorbency ones are designed for use when you have a medium to heavy flow however everyone definition of those terms are different. For me, I am a heavy bleeder that can go through an entire box of the Super Plus Absorbency size in a day; no I am not kidding. Tampax states that these will absorb nine to twelve grams of liquid – again – take that with a grain of salt. If you don’t get it inserted correctly or are moving around a lot, chances are you won’t get as much protection as you should. I like having the Super size around for the beginning and ending of my period, unless I am bleeding like a stuck pig [days two and three] I can get away with one of these ever 90 – 120 minutes without any leaks. After all, that’s why you wear a tampon, to prevent leaks and those oh so embarrassing moments when you realize that the chair you are sitting on didn’t have that big red mark on it when you sat down.

My first choice of tampons these days is the Kotex Security line because of the plastic applicator and the large ridge on the end of it that makes inserting it easy. The Tampax Biodegradable ones have a cardboard applicator with a ribbed section on the end – this is supposed to make holding on to the outer part of it easier but the ridges just aren’t deep enough and if you have wet hands the glossy coating on it make it a comical yet frustrating experience. The wrapper is made of paper so tossing these in your purse or knapsack is just asking for trouble because the do not travel very well. After a few days the paper will start to rip or get tore up and after that it’s only a matter of time before the applicator comes apart and these a tampon on the loose … not a good thing when you have kids that root through your things looking for a pen or spare change. On the upside, now that my boys are fully aware of what these are and what they are used for … they always ask me before going through my things.

Now, you might be wondering why I would even write a review about the Tampax Super tampons if my first choice is the Kotex Security – well, I mustn’t be the only person that likes the Kotex line because they do sell out quickly at places like Wal-Mart and Target. When that happened I always reach for either the Super or Super Plus Tampax – they are a great value, work like a charm and as moronic as it may sound – the wrappers are easy to get off. The Kotex Security ones have a plastic wrapper and sometimes they split or rip unevenly so getting the tampon out can be a real chore. The paper ones are easy to open but offer little protection when tossed in a gym back, purse or knapsack. I solved that problem by picking up a small plastic case that holds about eight of them. I don’t have to worry about them getting all ripped up or having to rifle through my bag to find one.

Comfort

Providing that you are experiencing a heavy flow, these are so comfortable to wear that you hardly notice you have one in but if you are just starting or ending your period, these might be a little tough to insert properly. As I mentioned I wear these at the start and finish of my period because I am a heavy bleeder, most women won’t need something of this size until they hit the peak of their period. It’s really important to remember to remove the used tampon before inserting another one and while that might sound like common sense, women who have heavy days will tell you that tampons do fall out on their own when sitting on the loo. This leads to doing your own mini gynecological exam on while on the throne or standing over the bowl trying to see if it’s in there or not. While this may sound gross, it’s better to be safe than sorry. No one wants to have to hit a panic stricken state and go to the emergency room for an internal exam.

Price

You can find these are most grocery, drug and retail stores for about $4.00 but be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the sales where you can snag these for 2 / $5.00 – and if you have coupons you can make a complete killing! One of my local grocery stores offers double coupons up to one dollar so I get these for .50 cents a box. For the price these are more than worth it; even more so if you have heavy days where you feel like you have to be within twenty feet of a bathroom at all times. The Tampax brand has never let me down and I consider them to be well worth the price – whether they are on sale or not.

Things To Know

• It is important to familiarize yourself with the dangers that are associated with using tampons, mainly the threat of TSS, Toxic Shock Syndrome. In each box of Tampax Tampons there is an informative sheet that gives you some crucial information about TSS and how to avoid contracting it. It is suggested that to reduce the risk of TSS you should use the lowest absorbency tampon possible and remove them every six to eight hours regardless of whether or not they need to be changed.

• The Tampax website offers you information about all their feminine care products and has a helpful question and answer section as well as sections just for teens. The Bottom Line

I really like the protection that I get from these for the beginning and ending of my period and I make a complete killing on them when they are on sale and stock up on them when I can. I do bounce back and forth between the Tampax and Kotex line of products and highly recommend them both but I’ve used Tampax for a long, long time and trust them completely. Any time I had any questions or concerns their customer service team have always provided quick answers and made sure that I was completely satisfied with their product. If you are looking for a tampon that is going to give you solid protection against leaks, has a textured applicator and is 100% disposable then this is one to check out. For the price, you can’t go wrong but remember – stock up when they are on sale!
