plaything's Full Review: Tanita BF 679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor and...
When my old digital scale went on the fritz, I decided to look around for another one and check into the newer scales also offering body fat analysis readings. That is when I came across the Tanita Scale, mine is model #TBF-622.
I chose this particular scale because of many different reasons. First it had the basics of what I was looking for: a digital scale with a body fat monitoring device built in. Next, it seemed easy to use and obtain the readings. It also had the capability of monitoring 2 persons individually and special functioning to provide calibration to my specific body type for the most accurate readings of body fat.
I am most pleased by the performance of this product. Before you use it, you must choose from three different modes to successfully hone in on the most accurate readings for your body type. The scale/body fat monitor offers three modes: Child mode, Adult mode, & the Athletic mode.
The Child mode: is designed to be set for children up to the age of 18, who are over 3-1/2 feet tall, and who have moderately active to inactive lifestyles, and whose bodies are still developing.
The Adult mode: is designed to be set for Adults aged 18 and older who have moderately active to inactive lifestyles.
The Athletic mode: is designed to be set for extremely active and physically fit adults. They further explain their guidelines for usage under this mode, as someone who gets approximately 10 hours a week of intense physical activity and those who have a resting heart rate of approximately 60 beats per minute or less. Also people who have been very fit for years but currently exercise less than 10 hours per week. The company also stresses that beginners who exercising at least 10 hours per week but haven't built up their physical regime long enough to establish a pattern of time, do not qualify under the "athlete" mode.
Once you have set your mode, you are ready to obtain an accurate reading. The unit has installed a patented "foot pad" electrode design that uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to determine body fat. The company states the accuracy can be compared to the results given by any professional reading and I will attest to that fact.
I have had my body fat measured and come home to test my scale, and the results were nothing less than impressive. I have since, only relied on my Tanita scale for the information I require; I no longer need to get it from my health club.
I really love the design of this product. The grooves in place, resemble feet, (they call them foot pads, and where the body fat readings come from), and I like how it is so easy to just step on and in a matter of moments I have my weight/body fat results. I also have the dark gray scale which is a nice change from the standard white scales I am used to, that also get dirty so easily. The unit uses 4 AA batteries and unlike other scales I have owned, doesn't drain them after a few weeks of usage.
The two person capability comes in handy if you have two persons wishing to benefit from monitoring their progress. My sister uses the scale as well when she comes over, and is most pleased with the ease of use, as well.
For women using this product, they need to compare weight and body fat percentage measurements taken under the same conditions over a period of time. Women also need to pay attention to fluctuations caused by natural monthly body cycles. The most accurate readings are obtained by charting the readings every day for at least a month. Then when monitoring at regular intervals you can anticipate monthly fluctuations.
For any user to determine the percentage of body fat that is appropriate for your body, you should consult your physician. Ask to see a chart of the desired healthy range for body fat. Women generally have about 5% more body fat, and cannot use the same guidelines designed for men.
The actual weight readings I have also found to be right on the money. I have taken my weight after coming home from the doctor and found it to be the exact weight. This was a problem I had encountered with other digital scales I have used, not getting very accurate weight readings.
The scale/monitor also comes in colors of dark gray or white, which you can choose from to match your bathroom decor, or just your personal preference. The unit also has the capability of weighing an a adult up to 300lbs.
All & all, I am very pleased with the Tanita Duo Memory Body Fat Monitor/Scale. I find the readings to be as promised: as accurate as if done by a professional. I love the scales design and the ease of usage. I couldn't be more pleased then to be able to monitor my health more closely in the privacy of my own home; and this product takes me one step closer to achieving overall awareness of my physical health on a consistent basis.
I would most definitely recommend this product for those who have experience with monitoring of body fat, and even for those who have never had a reading, but are interested in having that information to help them be more aware of themselves and their bodies. So they may in turn, modify their exercise or diet (if needed), to get within the range of body fat desired to optimize their physical health.
Note: This unit is not intended for use by professional athletes or bodybuilders and also comes with a warning that the body fat monitor function of this product should not be used by those having pacemakers, or other implanted medical devices.
