Talashandy's Full Review: Maeve Binchy - Tara Road
I was highly anticipating this book coming to paperback. I read a review on it long ago and was excited about reading this. When it finally came out, I eagerly snatched it up.
As soon as I got home, I curled up in my chair and started to read. At first, I felt disoriented. The beginning was choppy and jumped several years in a couple of pages. Yeesh! But I plodded on, because I just knew this book would be great. I read further into the book and instead of feeling my usual closeness with and to the characters, I felt distanced. When Ria and Danny met, I kept thinking that Danny was going to do something horrible to Ria, since his emotions and her emotions just didn't strike me as sincere. I was surprised when she said I love you! I continued to think they were playing one another. My way I surprised when they decided to get married. I had to re-read that whole chapter again to try and catch the real emotions there, and I still didn't accomplish that. There just simply wasn't any there.
Deeper into the story, it became more predictable, and still, the emotions seemed way to detached. When I finally reached the last page, I felt horrible. I didn't feel anything for these people. They had no feelings themselves. At least it wasn't conveyed to me! I was surprised at the ending, which is none an ending at all! It leaves you hanging. I will probably try and read this again. But I doubt I will get anymore out of this than I have (or haven't, as the case may be).
