Tastykake Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Finger Cakes : Delicious treat for people who don't eat sugar
Written: May 29 '09
Pros:Moist, sweet, delicious.
Cons:A bit higher in fat than I would like.
The Bottom Line: I love these! They're terrific for an occasional, delicious, sugar-free treat!
Whether by choice, or for health reasons, many of us can't (or simply don't) eat sugar-filled foods. But that doesn't mean we don't enjoy a delicious snack every now and then. Luckily, Tastykake has developed a line of sugar-free goodies called Sensables. There are several varieties of cakes and cupcakes. This review is for their Chocolate Chip Finger Cakes. Their finger cakes are my favorites - they're extremely moist and delicious!
These are vanilla-based cakes, with a generous amount of chocolate-chips throughout. Bear in mind that although these are called "cakes" and the picture on the box makes it seem like they're giant loaves that you can actually slice, they're really quite small. Each "cake" is less than an inch tall, about four inches long, and one inch wide. So, no, you won't be offering slices of these cakes to your guests as the entire cake amounts to about four or five bites.
Each cake is a single serving, for which you will receive 100 calories, 6g of fat, and 120 mg of sodium. That's really not too bad, as long as you stick to eating only one, although it's a bit higher in fat than I would like.
But how do they taste? Absolutely wonderful! Many sugar-free products suffer from dryness, but these do not. They are unbelievably moist, sweet, and delicious. The cake, itself, is sweet and has a hint of vanilla. There are plenty of chips, enough so that they're present in every bite.
What gives these snacks their sweetness? Well, the cake contains both Maltitol and Sucralose. And the chips contain Maltitol. These sugar substitutes can wreak havoc on your digesting system. So take my advice, and don't over-indulge in these snacks until you're sure your system can handle it. I can eat one, without any problems at all, but I wouldn't dare push it, and eat more in one sitting.
The box contains 8 cakes, and costs around $4. I try to buy them on sale, for around $3. Each cake is individually wrapped, with a full ingredients and nutrition label on each wrapper.
I'm really glad that even though I don't eat sugar, I can enjoy these delicious snacks. Thanks, Tastycake!!
