| goodeatsrfun's Full Review: Taverna Opa |
This place in an institution! My friends and I have been here about a dozen times, so take it from me, I know what Im talking about with this one.
Where to begin, Parking is a mess! There is no self-parking to my knowledge. The later you go the more crowded it gets, be prepared to wait a few minutes in the median before there is enough room to pull into the small valet lot. A police car is parked in the middle of the road when its gets real busy. They dont charge you for the valet, just a tip, unless you want to keep your car right up front, then I think its only 5-10 dollars (unnecessary).
OK, from here you will notice there are basically three dining areas. The main room, the smaller room with a view of the grill and seafood cases, and an outside intercostals dock style section. If you want the real Opa experience you must be in the main dining room. None of the excitement even makes it outside, and the smaller room is kinda boring too.
You will no doubt wait a good amount of time to get in. They do not seat you unless your party is there in full. Usually they serve drinks outside to waiting customers. Once inside youll quickly notice the DJ who is stationed right next to the door. He will continually play a mix of Greek, Latin, and techno-ish music throughout your entire stay at very high volumes. Sit next to the people you would like to speak with, or you will be yelling all night.
First things first, order a bottle of table wine and glasses for everyone, you need a good buzz going for this place. Each table receives a mortar and pestle full of chickpeas for make-your-own humus (good fun). Then peruse the menu; there is everything you can imagine. The filet mignon tips are fantastic, the spinach pastry Spanakopita are great, the Greek-Salad includes a huge chunk of feta cheese, beautiful tomatoes, cucumber, onion and olives (split them 2-3 persons per order), Stuffed Peppers are an awesome option for vegetarians, chicken kabobs are renowned, Same with the lamb. For desert is the best baklava Ive ever had and its a huge wedge, enough for 3 people. Dont forget to keep the wine coming, although Im sure the waiter will not forget to remind you.
As for ordering, its easiest to get a bunch of stuff and split dishes among the entire table. Its so loud in there that its best to assign someone the job of ordering and let him/her rip. The waiter will come over and in between songs there may be enough time to for him to hear your order. Just get loads of stuff, you will love everything.
Once you finish your meal the real party starts, Make sure you get a good table in the center of the main dining room and you will be pleasantly surprised. The norm in this place is to dance on top of the tables! Yep you heard me right, bring your dancing shoes! Only certain tables are usable, so try and get a good one. They are sturdy, but be careful anyway. Soon enough a belly dancer fully clad in bells and beautiful yet revealing outfit will hop up on your table and show you the ropes. Tipping is her is customary after a nice dance. Feel free to get up there with her and shake your tail. Good times to be had for everyone, including your kids if they can handle the music.
Still more wine coming! Yep, get your moneys worth and stay for a while, the bill will be high at the end of the night. But hey, good times like these are priceless.
If youve made it this far through my review, you will probably want to visit this restaurant. Just a few more words of advise. Make sure you tell your company what this place is about, loud Music, Good Food, and Lots of Dancing, yet also very crowded. If you make it to the end of the night you will see the finale of plate smashing, napkin throwing, and perhaps some fire too!
This place is a gem; if you are a 20-40 something you should fit right in. Dress nice too; its a fashion show in there.
