Taylor Big Baby is Big on Sound and Value! (Reply to this comment)
by taylor412ce
The Big Baby is the ultimate campfire and travel guitar.
I own a 1997 Taylor 412CE, a 2003 Taylor 214, an Ovation 1775 and a 2001 Taylor Big Baby 306 GB.
There is no way that I'd pack around my 412CE, 214 or Ovation. But the Big Baby fits the bill perfectly.
While not as small as the Martin Backpacker or the original Taylor Baby, in comparison, it exponentially comes through sound-wise.
Solid spruce top and ebony fretboard and soft case for $270. Wow!
I have taken it on airplanes as carry on with no problem and have strapped it to my backpack on short 5-10 mile treks. It is always a pleasure to have the comfort of my Big Baby wherever I go.
I used to have an old beater Takamine, that I got from a pawn shop, that I'd take on trips and camping. But ever since I purchased my Big Baby, the Takamine has been on permanent loan to the boys in my Boy Scout Troop.
Since 1997 I have played the bejesus out of my 412CE and decided that I was putting too many miles on my best guitar. So I purchased a Taylor 110 but I found it too closely resembling my Big Baby. So I returned it and got the 214 (Leaps and bounds better than the 110)
The bottom line is that this is a great guitar for the money.
If you need a guitar to drag around, don't worry about the size being bigger than the Backpacker or the Baby, this is the guitar that you want. You can't go wrong!

As a long-time guitar player that needs both a new acoustic and a new electric, I think I will be reading a lot of your reviews! Thanks for the great information on this Taylor.

Read the mention of Keith Jarrett in your profile. He's great. I have Live at the Deer Head Inn with him.

. . . in learning to play guitar. This sounds like a suitable beginning for a beginner such as I.

P.S. Now I have to lobby Santa with convincing flair!

Nice in-depth review. This sounds like an ideal starter guitar for someone who wants to pick up an inexpensive, yet quality guitar.
My sister-in-law is taking lessons right now, and has a junked yardsale guitar.. This might be a perfect Christmas present. Thanks for the insightful review.
