higle's Full Review: Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar
I'll never forget the day I bought my Taylor Big Baby. It was a slow day at work, so a jam buddy and I took a long lunch break and headed down to the local Guitar Center to "just look" at guitars. I had absolutely no intention of purchasing anything.
He had been telling me about these Taylor Big Baby guitars for a while, and he said that the Guitar Center had just gotten one in, and that I should play it. Alright. I headed back to the acoustic room, located the Big Baby, and immediately had my doubts.
It was small. It had a bolt-on neck (with visible screws at the 16th fret!). It had no binding, no decoration (except for a pick guard, and some etching around the sound hole). I saw the price tag: $270. How could anything that costs $270 be worth such a fuss? But then I played it.
I was amazed. Absolutely astounded. A few of the other reviews have stated that the bass response from the Big Baby is weak... Mine kicks bass like nobody's business! I played that guitar for no more than 3 minutes before I knew I had to have it. It had all of the clarity, punch, perfect intonation (all over the fretboard. Impeccable!) of the $3,000 Taylors hanging up in the "Special" acoustic room in the very back, but only costs $270. Like I said before, absolutely amazing. I bought it. I've played this guitar nearly every day since.
Maybe I just got an exceptional Big Baby, but mine carries as much volume as a full sized dreadnought. It fills up the house when I play it. That characteristic Taylor clarity is there; you can hear every note of every chord you play distinctly. The day I bought it, I took it to my guitar teacher to see what he thought of it. It was all I could do to pry it out of his hands. For a man who has played many guitars, owns more than a few high dollar ones, and who has perfect pitch, it was surprising to see how he drooled over my sub-$300 travel guitar. He's going to buy one as soon as another one comes in.
Like I said before, this guitar is as spartan as it gets. Taylor somehow fit $6,000 worth of tone into a $100 shell. They made every effort possible to reduce the manufacturing cost of the guitar without reducing its quality as an instrument.
Overall, this is a guitar that everyone should own. Its size and weight is ideal for the young beginner or the petite lady, yet not so small as to look like a little toy in the hands of a 6', 220 lb lummox like me. The sound is unbelievable, which is what matters the most. For those who wonder why you would want a smaller guitar vs. a full sized dreadnought, if it sounds the same and has 1/4 the weight it's a lot more fun to lug to a gig.
The Taylor Big Baby Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar gives you great quality for a respectable price. Great tone from a solid Sitka spruce top is given pro...More at Guitar Center
