| lmh3's Full Review: Taylor Made r7 TP Irons |
Riding the wave of success of their r7 drivers, Taylor Made has carried the r7 brand through their irons for the upcoming year. This allows them to have people using an r7 product from driver through sand wedge. The r7 iron has taken the place of the RAC OS2 iron set as the intermediate offering in their product line. It appears at first to be very similar to the RAC OS2 irons from the top, but that is where the similarities stop. There are some technological advancements as well as adaptations from other Taylor Made products that make the r7 irons unique and innovative.
The r7 iron shares the same footprint as the OS2, an oversize head with medium top line and moderate offset. Taylor Made has introduced a very brightly colored aluminum insert in the back of the club to reduce vibrations and make the club feel softer. Further change to the back of the face is the addition of the inverted cone design that has made their drivers some of the longest on tour. The inverted cone allows for higher ball speed on slightly off center hits for increased distance even if you miss the ball a little. The extremely deep cavity drops the center of gravity lower and deeper in the club head for added height for optimal launch conditions and control.
These irons will launch the ball high, the deep cavity combined with the moderate offset ensure this. This is ideal for players who have a bit of difficulty getting the ball airborne. The sacrifice here is that you are not able to shape shots as easily due to the low and deep center of gravity. I found it extremely difficult to hit a controlled fade or draw, I was not able to judge how much to cut or draw the ball to get the desired ball flight. The offset also helps square the club face at impact resulting in straighter more accurate shots when going right at the flag. The aluminum dampening web does soften the feel when making impact, I don't think it is quite as good as the polymer insert that was in the RAC irons.
This set is ideal for the intermediate to above average player who is looking for a higher ball flight and is willing to sacrifice some shot shaping ability in order to achieve this. They are extremely forgiving due to the offset, inverted cone, and oversize club head.
