| tracmd's Full Review: Tea Tree Giovanni Shampoo, Triple Treat, Part Org ... |
For many years, I have been cursed with scalp problems. They haven't been horrific by any means, but they have certainly been a nuisance. I have tried shampoo after shampoo, and would often run into the same two problems: terrible itchiness and flaking. I find it a bit disconcerting to be posting my scalp problems out there for the world to read, but I'll press on. I tend to get dead cell build-up on my scalp. I also have a tendency to get allergic reactions to shampoos as well. The two combine into an unpleasant mess, resulting in me needing to return many shampoos after only one use. That was until I found Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo.
I purchased the 8.5 fl. oz. bottle at Whole Foods for roughly $8. It is an attractive, transparent, colorless plastic bottle with a flip cap top. According to Giovanni, the shampoo is "Enriched with Certified Organic Botanicals," has "No Animal By-Products," and is "Cruelty Free." The label also says that the shampoo increases scalp circulation, removes all traces of dirt, oils and build-up, alleviates dry, flaking scalp with organic peppermint botanicals, and contains no laurel/laureth sulfates.
The ingredients are:
Purified water with *Tea Tree Oil, *Peppermint Oil, *Eucalyptus Oil, *Rosemary Oil, *Nettle Oil, *Thyme Oil, Birch Leaf Oil, *Chamomile, *Clary, *Lavender, *Coltsfoot Leaf, *Yarrow Oil, *Mallow, *Horsetail Oil, *Soybean Protein, C12-14 Olefin Sulfonate (coconut derived), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Tocopherol (Vit.E), Trace Minerals, Citric Acid (corn), Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Sodium Chloride (sea salt), Grapefruit seed (citrus derived)
* Certified Organic
As one can see from the above ingredients, most of the components of the shampoo are organic. The shampoo itself is a moderately thick, clear gel. It is not too concentrated, so I need to use about a silver dollar sized amount for my shoulder length hair. I sometimes require more. The scent is a very strong and invigorating (as described) minty and tea tree oil smell. I think it is a very nice, refreshing smell.
The ingredients suggest that one should "Massage rich latter into wet hair and rinse." When I simply followed these instructions exactly, I found that the shampoo only did partially what it described. It cleaned my hair well, but did not leave me with any tingling, and I still was left with my scalp issues. I find that the key is to really massage the shampoo into my hair and scalp. I find that this accomplishes several things. It gives my scalp a good scrubbing, results in improved circulation and a nice tingly feeling, and significantly decreased flaking. It also eradicates the itchy scalp.
I do not leave the shampoo on, for I do not find it necessary. I just massage the shampoo into my wet hair, using circular motions around my entire scalp, massage it into my hair, and then rinse. I do follow up with Conditioner, because it is imperative. If I don't condition after using this shampoo, my hair is a dry tangly mess. It is quite drying. Oh, and before I forget, do NOT, I repeat do NOT get this into your eyes. The sting is excruciating. This is also definitely not a shampoo that any child should try. Due to the strong essential oils, this should probably be restricted to adult use.
I am now on my fourth or fifth bottle of this shampoo. I love that my scalp is no longer itchy, and that my flaking is minimized. I do have to use a T-Gel type shampoo about every four days or so to really take care of the scalp build-up. But, all in all, I am very happy with the shampoo. I think anyone with mild to moderately flakiness will love it. Those with significant flakiness and/or itchy scalp will also likely love it too, as long as they occasionally use a more medicinal treatment from time to time. All in all, me and my scalp are both quite happy with this.
On a bit of a side note, I clean my makeup brushes with this too. It does a great job of cleaning them, but is not too harsh.
