I agree. Education is about opening your mind to new ideas and seeing old ideas from a fresh perspective. The Huck Finn ban has always been (at least as far as I know) about the language. The "n" word is used throughout. I only read Huckleberry Finn in college and it made me uncomfortable. Still, I don't think that discomfort should make it a banned book. It's all the more reason to discuss it.

I've ever understood why Huckleberry Finn was banned (supposedly it's racist, but it's actually anti-slavery)

-- and then there's Alice in Wonderland (she takes drugs: she eats the mushroom, and then she drinks that stuff that makes her big or small)

Closed minds do not belong in education, IMHO

Ouch, that's expensive! I think I've seen that book but I never perused it. Thanks for the recommendation.

It is a very nice resource to have on hand. Like I said, it doesn't cover that many books, but the ones it does, it handles well. There's another book I have on my shelves that deals with banned books called Hit List for Young Adults 2: Frequently Challenged Books. I haven't read that one so I can't recommend it but it does deal with a lot more books but in much shorter sections. Each of the 20 books only has about two or three pages of commentary and further reading. There aren't any discussion questions or activities in it but it does have information about the actual challenges.

There's actually a great book called Banned In the USA that talks about book banning, but it's only avaliable from libraries (unless you want to cough up the $80 it was going for last time I looked.)

Wow, what a wonderful resource for me! I homeschool my four boys, and this will make a nice addition to my library of teaching materials. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks! I have another one I want to review that's actually been banned but I probably won't get around to writing it until next week.
