Whenever I travel south of the border to Tijuana (California border town in the Baja Peninsula, Mexico, just south of San Diego), I like to relax at the bars that stretch along the Avenida Revolucion. The town of Tecate is only about 30 miles east of Tijuana, so a local beer favorite in Tijuana is, naturally, Tecate beer -- served with a wedge of lime and a shaker of salt.
Tecate is a fine tasting Mexican beer. There is nothing too unique about its flavor. Indeed, it tastes very much like other Mexican beers, and for good reason: this beer is brewed by Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, S.A., a brewing giant that also brews Bohemia, Carta Blanca, Superior, Tecate Light, XX Lager, Sol, and Indio beer brands. There is a brewery still in the small town of Tecate, and it is a popular tourist attraction for beer drinkers from Southern California. While maquiladoras (assembly plants) represent the fastest growing area of business in Tecate, Beer is still king in this small town.
Tecate is a medium-bodied lager with a golden yellow color. This is a finely balanced beer - you will not find it be sweet or bitter in taste. The beer has a light amount of carbonation and has a modest head. Surprisingly, it tastes good with a squeeze of lime and when served this way, it also tastes great with some fresh fish tacos.
A cold Tecate is always a treat. This is a good beer to drink with light Mexican foods. I enjoy drinking a Tecate whenever I eat a plate of carnitas tacos (fried pork with cilantro, diced onions and salsa folded in a corn or flour tortilla). Any food with cilatro and chile begs for a Mexican beer to wash everything down nicely.
If you buy a six-pack of 12 oz. bottle, expect to pay about $6-7.50 for a six-pack. This beer is not nearly as popular as Corona, but it usually can be found at a lower price. Now, you can also buy this beer in 24 oz. cans for about $1.50 at liquor stores (at least this is true here in Los Angeles County, California).
If you are a Bud or Miller drinker, try this one for a change of pace. It is a good quality beer with balanced flavor that will take a wedge of lime and will backup a shot of Tequila better than most American brews.
