Pros: Excellent quality for its class
Cons: Poor remote design, AM reception?
The Bottom Line: Definitely a good buy with the amazing sound quality. Some functions are a little difficult to use/get used to (tuner), but the rest is stunning.

| mojo_n's Full Review: Technics SA-AX540 Receiver |
I have been looking for a good receiver to use for my computer (instead of those crummy speakers that came with the computer). For what I need, this unit provides it all. It does not have a built in decoder, but does feature
Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound. It does 100W @ 8 Ohms (which should be enough for a small-mid size setup for sure). I've set it up for surround sound (4 point, using a sb live!value) and it sounds great. The unit features bass and treble tone controls, as well as balance.
The receiver part of the unit could be better designed. The combination of the remote features and the unit features together are good. But they are separated and it becomes a nuisance. For example, it is practically impossible to surf the stations from the remote control, but is easy as pie from the unit itself. You can't program stations from the remote, only from the unit (although it's not everyday that one programs stations, so this is not too much of a bother). The AM stations I don't get, but that may just be antenna placement. It doesn't much matter to me though, since I don't listen to AM.
Also, you can't switch between speakers A & B (or both) with the remote, which is bothersome as well.
On the plus side, I find the sound quality EXCELLENT, with a good range.
All in all, if you're not looking for a digital decoder in your receiver, I would recommend this unit if the disadvantages stated don't bother you. 8/10 is my rating.
