| cntaur5's Full Review: Technics SL-1200M3D Turntable |
Disc Jockeys (DJs) know that its the quality of your sound system is what sets you apart from your competitors. Other turntables on the market could probably compete with the Technics SL1200 Turntable System however this is my favorite. The renowned name, Technics, an audio sub-brand of Panasonic is well known in the music industry.
In fact Technics SL1200 Turntable System is recognized as a staple turntable through out the DJ world. The Technic 1200 is like your favorite car, it makes you feel good and you know how to handle it on the road, versus that brand new model youve been eying at the dealership, you may test drive it, but somehow you end up keep your favorite car.
From the average Joe Blow to house music pioneers such as Maseo, De La Soul and Sasha, everybody thats somebody in the DJ industry has touched the Technic 1200. Even as new technology makes vinyl records appear obsolete, LPs are still being sliced and cut on the Technics 1200 turntable throughout the world.
Technic has been around since the early 1970s spiraling through the Disc Jockey and home entertainment system world like your favorite singer. The Technics 1200 is no longer referred to as a hi-fi turntable they currently hold the title as one of the best turntables on the market dropping the hi-fi as it crossed the cultural time line of the 70s.
Features:
The Technics SL1200 Turntable System has the easy to slide pitch control tab that allows the user the opportunity to adjust the tempo by plus or minus 8 percent. This feature is a big deal since it allows you to pick up the pace on an LP and add a little extra speed. Technics pitch adjustment of the records beats per minute (BPM) is extremely important. When playing music off records being able to change the tempo of tracks is essential in keeping the dance floor moving, especially if you want to get paid.
Another feature I like is the headshell, which has a screw-on weight over the needle. I am not ashamed to admit that I was one of those DJs who use to tape a penny on top of the headshell to prevent the needle from jumping on one of my no-name turntables. The screw-on weight is easy to use. Simply, play a record and adjust the weight accordingly, ensuring that the record floats. Some DJs adjust their weight a little heavier for performances based upon their individual skill level. Although I dont DJ as much as I use too while enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, I have not had to replace the needle since purchasing the system almost 8 months ago.
The tone arm can be adjusted but I like mine in its standard position. It's pretty easy to adjust. You'll need a small flat head screwdriver, which you can use to loosen the outer locking screw on the top of the pivot point.
The Technics SL1200 Turntable System also has some shock absorbency with its 4 absorbing rubber feet that help minimize skipping and protects your LP if the system is bumped. Naturally the system is sturdy with its molded aluminum die cast body, weighing in at a whopping 26 pounds holding its place securely whether set up on a DJ table or inside your stereo cabinet.
Disc Jockeys will appreciate the direct drive system thats been integrated into this system. The direct drive allows engages a motor, which allows you the chance to cue up to speed in less than a second without having to drag your fingers on the LP to cue it up. The Technics 1200 make manipulating an LP manually, under a needle easy.
The system comes with a plastic no-hinge dust cover that I do not use, unless Im traveling. There is also one felt and one rubber slipmats, which I use simultaneously for scratching and play. The system also comes with the standard easy to read manual that I discarded.
Although the average Joe Blow can use the Technic 1200s Im not going to recommend this industry turntable to the novice. Some basic system knowledge will be needed; including making sure that your home system has a phono jack or plug.
The only real negative to the Technic 1200 is that youll have to have some expertise on connecting it. For example if you hear a humming sound, it be the mixer, amp, or maybe its the turntable's ground connection, or worn-out cartridge connectors, so youll have to know the basics.
Before investing in the Technic 1200 its important to remember that Vinyl slowly wear down each time you play it. After a while, the quality of your music starts to fade as the LP may get scratched and naturally the dust that can accumulate can clog your needle.
No matter what type of turntable you use, every time you play an LP, the stylus needle cuts into the groove bit by bit until after a short while your record doesn't sound as good as it did when you initially unwrapped it.
Overall, Im giving it 5 stars, the look, feel and sound are wonderful, its easy to see why the Technics 1200 have played more way than any other system, remaining the number one choice for DJs. In my opinion, the Technics 1200 is the finest turntable ever; its a real workhorse that can handle a lot of wear and tear.
