| jaxprat's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Adjustable Sleep System |
My husband and I had had our eyes on a Tempur-Pedic for about a year, but we were waiting to see just how big a dip it would take in our 7-year-old spring mattress before we would get a new bed. The dip became measurable in inches a few weeks ago so we headed over to the local Mattress Unlimited to shop and nap.
We had previously tested out the mattresses and had one of the standard pillows at home, but this time we were serious shoppers. We spent a good 20 minutes each lying on the Deluxe, Celebrity, and Classic models, but when we came to the Rhapsody my husband passed out and I fell in love. It was all the propaganda said it would be - firm, supportive, conforming. We also looked at the Grand, but we truly felt no difference between the two. You cannot wash the cover of the Grand as you can with the Rhapsody and the Grand does not support the adjustable.
The Deluxe model had the adjustable/powered base and when we started playing with it and turning on the vibrating motion, we were sold. My husband has the beginning stages of reflux issues and I do a lot of reading/internet surfing in bed so being able to move the head of the bed up was a real bonus. I am also a nurse so just having the feet up is great on the low back and legs after a long day at work. We liked that you can save the settings to your favorite positions and the vibrating motion is soothing - it has an auto shut-off after a half an hour but I am long into slumber by that point.
Before buying we gave it 24 hours (we do this with any big purchase) and I read every review I could find so I could go back and ask questions. As a result of the research, I was able to finagle 2 free comfort pillows, a discount on a waterproof mattress cover, and a small discount off the price of the bed basically because the salesman was a nice guy (seriously). The price was the same as what we would have paid on-line including white-glove delivery.
To address some of the complaints - yes, the bed smells when it is opened up. I debated asking the store to air it out for a week before delivery but decided against it. I would advise getting the waterproof mattress cover as it almost totally covers up the smell. My husband has a dog nose and did not have a problem with the odor, but I can see how those with environmental sensitivities would be bothered. On the issue of trapping heat, neither of us has noticed one way or another. We got 18" deep pocket sheets which work fine with the base.
This store had another memory foam bed "comparable" to the deluxe model, but we could absolutely tell the difference in the quality. We also rested on the Simmons Beauty rest with the memory foam top and found the high-end model excellent for those who prefer the spring mattress - it would have been our 2ed choice. And yes, the bed is very expensive - but you get what you pay for. Use the 90-day trial if you are on the fence, but remember it applies to the mattress only, not the adjustable base.
I have noticed a lot of the negative reviews I have read stem from customer service issues with Tempur-Pedic on-line. I cannot stress enough the importance of having a "face" to ask questions and take concerns to. Someone in a call center is not going to care about customer satisfaction the same way a local storeowner will. Even if you do buy on-line, you cannot go for reputation alone - you have to lie in the bed! Memory foam is not for everyone and if you have doubts, spend more time in the store. Lie in the position you normally sleep in, not just on your back.
Since we got this bed we have both noticed we feel more rested upon waking and nearly all of our little aches and pains have gone away. On a humorous note, when our old cat felt the vibrating massager, rather than running away she splayed out on her back and had the most indecently happy look on her face. Maybe Tempur-Pedic should look into animal beds!
