Pros: dreamy sleep, solid company, great for reading/working or medical conditions, mattresses fit nicely together
Cons: slight smell for 1 week, super expensive, will need custom bed linens
The Bottom Line: I love this bed and will use nothing else. I don't even want to travel because I will have to sleep on an inferior bed!

| dlebaron's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Adjustable Sleep System |
We had a high quality standard innerspring mattress that had worn out over the years. My husband suffers from GERD and has to use a wedge in the bed to sleep. Also, we only had a queen sized bed. Since he slept on the wedge, which took up 1/2 of the queen bed, I would theoretically also have half of the bed. However, 1-3 small children and 2 cats would also end up trying to share my 1/2 of the queen bed, leaving me with a thin sliver of mattress! Anyway, I had been dreaming about getting a Cal-king sized adjustable bed. The wedge would be gone and my husband could get more elevation (improving his heartburn). I could have 1/4 of a king sized bed instead of a queen, which had to be better. Also, I could read in bed in style (one of my favorite activities).
Trying to shake off the old craftmatic commercials of only elderly people using an adjustable bed and overcoming to the sticker shock of an adjustable bed took some time. I initially was looking at the standard coil mattress in adjustable bed frame. The problem with those was that the higher quality mattresses had a large gap in the middle, and it seemed like one of our kids might get lost/stuck. Also, the warranty was about half as long as the tempur-pedic mattress (10 years as opposed to 20). So then I started looking longingly at the tempur-pedic adjustable bed.
Now, T-P has about 10 bed models. I ended up falling in love with the Rhapsody bed. I liked the next higher up model as well, the Celebrity bed, but it comes in Eastern (not California) King. Given that I have an extremely tall husband I could only go with a Cal King. But the price tag was more than I could bear ($7500)! The extravagance! The decadence! I was not worthy of such a bed. Plus, my husband (at the time deployed to Afghanistan) said, "Absolutely not".
Well, more painful, sleepless nights and a general desire to get the bed before my husband came home (too frugal to ever spend any money on us) began to wear on me. I visited the bed several times. I got my husband to agree that we were worth it. (I wouldn't buy a bed without his permission!). I finally decided to take the plunge.
I was terrified that I had made a huge mistake. People wrote about the smell, and that they had more pain on the mattress. There was the fear that it would start to sag.
The bed was delivered. A slight odor was present, gone within 1 week. The bed is a DREAM. I LOVE it. I cannot drag myself out of it in the morning. It feels like I am sleeping on a cloud. I cannot say enough how much I love this bed. My husband even rationalized that if it truly lasted for 20 years, we would end up spending about $1 a day.
I thought briefly about a less expensive brand of memory foam. However, I wanted a brick and mortar store to buy the mattress from in case I wanted to return it. Plus, I felt like I had some obligation to the poor guy who showed it to me so many times. Also, I feel that T-P will be around for 20 years (at least more likely than the other off-brand memory foam companies). A warranty is only as good as the company it comes from. T-P will replace your mattress if it sinks more than 3/8 of an inch. That's some warranty!
The bedding situation was somewhat of a problem. The sheets must be special ordered online and are expensive (at least $100 for a set). I received a pair from the mattress store (Gotcha Covered was the name brand of the sheets) and they are OK. I will purchase sheets from the T-P website next. I bought the mattress covers from the T-P website and they are very high quality. But, you cannot find a bedskirt to fit this bed. Because of the metal bars at the end of the bed to keep it from falling off the frame when you go up, you cannot just put a regular bedskirt on it. If you do, it will probably tear when 1 bed goes up but the other stays down. Also, you would have to cut holes in it to go around the bars. I eventually decided to make my own. I purchased a few yards of decorator fabric and made simple rectangles the right size. I placed velcro at the top. Then, I hand-sewed velcro to the frame of the bed (that was quite a pain). Now, I have custom bedskirts for the 2 individual beds that look great. It was a little bit of work, but I cannot think of another way to do it that would look decent.
