Pros: Somewhat comfortable, No pressure points, Isolates partners moves very well
Cons: Increased lower back pain. Causes my wife backpain. Hot. Difficult turning over while sleeping.
This is an update to my original review.
We've had the Tempur-Pedic mattress for almost 6 months, and we're now returning it to our retailer for a prorated credit. I'm very thankful to Sleep Source for working with us on the return.
Although I initially thought it was lessening, my lower back pain increased with the mattress use. My wife also began to have lower back pain too, and she never had any back problem before this mattress or any other mattress. In fact, she can also sleep on our almost 10 year old Sealy without any problems.
To help with the problem we flipped over our Tempur-Pedic mattress and added a cheap foam eggcrate pad. This gave us a much firmer and supported surface and it helped both of us, although it wasn't very comforatable. This test proved to me that the Tempur-Pedic memory foam is just too soft and unsupportive for us.
We purchased a new Simmons Beautyrest spring mattress and can't wait to be rid of the Tempur-Pedic. Other than the back pain issue, I initially liked the mattress's comfort. But even that I grew tired of with its hammock-like effect and heat buildup. My wife never really liked the mattress.
This was a costly experiment but even with the company's 90 day return policy, 90 days wasn't enough. I think the trial period is now 120 days. If you're thinking of buying this mattress, be sure to buy it from a reputable source that will allow you to return it without a hassle.
After reading many reviews of this mattress I'm convinced that we're not alone with the back pain issue. Everyone is different and some really love the mattress, but there are many, many people with the exact same back pain experience as we encountered.
As a side note, the Tempur-Pedic foundation also creaked when entering or leaving the bed.
At this point I could not recommend the mattress to anyone, regardless of their health.
We've had our Tempur-Pedic Classic king size mattress for about 4-1/2 months. We purchased it from a local retailer, Sleep Source, who was very helpful and delivery/setup was on time and complete.
This mattress replaced a 7 year old good quality spring mattress which was still in very good condition. The reason I replace it was because of waking up with back pain every day.
Like others have said, I find this mattress extremely comfortable. Our mattress did not have an odor like some have experienced. I do not find that the mattress gets hot. It warms up with your body temperature and that what softens the foam. Others have written at length how this mattress works so I won't spend time talking about that aspect of the mattress.
What the company says about reduced pressure points is true. Because of this, I find I hardly toss and turn anymore. With my previous spring mattress I always tossed and turned throughout the night. Also, there is very little if any motion transferred from your partner to you. It's almost as if there are two seperate mattresses.
I think the mattress is great, but I do have a problem with lower back pain. Since receiving the bed the pain has lessened, but that could be do to various stretching exercises I do most every morning. At this point I'm not sure if any mattress would elliminate the problem. Per Tempur-pedic's web site suggestions, I've recently tried removing all covers between the bed and I except for the sheet. This is supposed to allow the bed to warm up and soften more. I'm not sure if this has helped.
I may try going the opposite route and add an additional cover to try to firm up the bed. I spoke with Tempur-Pedic today about the matter and the customer service representative was useless. Since Tempur-Pedic supposed to be the mattress experts, I expected a little more from them, especially given the price of this mattress.
Another great thing about the mattress is how quickly it warms and softens. With our winter approaching and keeping the room temperature at 66 degrees I was afraid the bed would stay cold and absorb the heat from our bodies. This doesn't happen at all. Even with the room temp at 66 degrees and the mattress cold, I can get in bed and it quickly warms and softens in just a couple minutes at the most. I think getting in a standard spring mattress at this temperature feels much colder and takes longer to warm up. The funny thing about the Tempur-Pedic mattress is that the mattress only warms and softens around your body. You can place your hand on the middle of the bed and notice how much firmer it is. Tempur-Pedic recommends a room temp of no less than 65 degrees.
Everyone situation regarding back pain is different. I can only say this mattress did not elliminate my morning pain, but it has lessened. Maybe over more time it will further improve. As a side note, I have not been diagnosed with any severe back or spine disorder.
I absolutely recommend the mattress. Try it for the trial period. It is different and for some it takes some getting used to. I immediately liked it, but for my wife it took a month or so. She also likes it, but not as much as I do. I would hate to go back to spring mattress while my wife wouldn't care.
