Pros: Best sleep we've ever experienced! Excellent customer service!
Cons: May need a mattress cover for the Celebrity.
My wife and I started out on a waveless CA King waterbed that I had before we got married. I loved it, she was okay with it. When we moved we decided to get a Stearns and Foster pillow top mattress. We both hated it and woke up stiff and sore. We paid $700 for that mattress and decided to try out a Tempur-Pedic Celebrity CA King mattress after 6 months.
My wife has one hip shorter than the other as well as a rotator cuff problem so she has always tossed and turned and couldn't get comfortable in bed. She has always complained about my tossing and turning and snoring as well.
We took delivery of our Celebrity about 6 months ago and absolutely love it! It is soft and supportive at the same time. We love the way it molds to our body and provides us with sleep like we've never experienced before. My wife has had no aches and pains due to the mattress and she and I both do not toss and turn as much as we used to do. We are actually getting the same amount of rest with about an hour less sleep per night.
I suspect that people who complain about the Tempur-Pedic's firmness must have bought the Classic model, which when we tried it out was way too firm for us. The Deluxe model would have been a good alternative for us as well but with using our existing waterbed set we decided to go with the extra thickness and luxury of the Celebrity.
The bed does retain a bit of body heat but not so much to make it uncomfortable. Where we live in Southern California it gets up to 115 degrees F during the summer and cools down to around 80 at night. We haven't experienced any more discomfort on the Tempur-Pedic than our our regular mattress.
Was it expensive? Yes, but no more so than a high-end pillow top mattress. It comes with a 20 year warranty against any defects and depressions more than 3/4 of an inch. All other mattresses don't warranty against depressions. Our salesperson did tell us that over time the material does compress and all you need to do is to sleep in a different position every so often and that will take care of it. I also calculated what the cost of sleeping on this mattress for 20 years would be and it turned out to be and it worked out to around $13 per month. Not a bad deal at all for peaceful, restful sleep.
We're so impressed with our mattress that we've decided to get a Tempur-Pedic mattress for our son's 8th birthday as well.
Is there a downside? The only one we've found is that the cashmere material that makes up the cover on the Celebrity has a tendency to grab the bottom sheet in one direction which results in it getting moved around on one side of the bed. An email to Tempur-Pedic customer service resulted in a quick reply the next day telling us that they were sending us a mattress cover from Gotcha Covered that took care of the problem. Two thumbs up to Tempur-Pedic for excellent customer service response!
Oh, before we bought the Tempur-Pedic we test drove several other competitors that advertise that they are the same but cheaper than a Tempur-Pedic. Let me tell you that they are not the same. It's like wanting a Coke and drinking the generic store brand cola. It's close but not the same. Intial feel was good but once we laid on any of the competitors for longer than 5 minutes we could tell the difference in comfort and support. Plus the competitor product warranties weren't anywhere close to the Tempur-Pedic warranty.
Did I mention that we love our Celebrity? :)
UPDATE: (based on some questions I've received)
Q: Do you need to flip or rotate this mattress? Especially being a king size, that can be quite a chore.
A: No you do not need to flip or rotate the mattress. As a matter of fact Tempur-Pedic specifically indicates in their brochure that none of their mattresses should be flipped or rotated. The only caution is that after several months of sleeping in the same position the memory material will be softer in the spot you've been sleeping in than in the non-used area. They recommend that every once in a while change sleeping positions or just walk on the mattress to keep the wear pattern consistent across the mattress.
Q: If you do need to flip or rotate, are there handles to assist this process?
A: The mattress does come with sewn-in handles on both sides. It is a very heavy mattress in the CA King size (probably about 100-150 pounds so you don't want to move it much after it's plunked down).
Q: Do you need any special foundation for this mattress?
A: Yes! Tempur-Pedic sells two foundations, a regular height one and a low-profile one. Both of them are basically solid wood. You must have the Tempur-Pedic mattresses on either a solid platform bed style surface or use one of their foundations so as to not void the warranty. A regular box spring has springs in it and won't provide the proper support for the mattress.
Q: How does this do with regard to motion transfer?
A: Wonderfully! I'm a rather large guy (6'-4" and I'm not going to embarass myself saying how much I weigh but I probably would make a linebacker's momma happy!) and I can jump on the bed and my wife won't feel me doing that.
