| asweeny's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress |
We needed to buy a new bed, and after much research and consideration, we went to Brookstone to test the Tempur-pedic mattress. Long story short, we bought a King size mattress along with the foundation. It arrived on Nov 19, 2003.
From the first night we've hated this mattress. At first you lay on it and it's comfortable, but basically you just keep sinking into it until you're laying in a concave hole. The end result feels like a saggy old spring mattress. Plus, when you try to roll over or readjust yourself, you actually have to fight your way out of the concavity. Tempur-pedic says the material is "heat sensitive", but they don't also tell you it's weight sensitive--so you just keep sinking through the visco elastic until you hit the soft, low-density (read "cheap") polyurethane foam layer below. And another weird thing is that while the bed is soft around your torso--it's hard as hell around your legs, arms and the lighter parts of your body. You feel like you're in a hammock. Somebody also said it's like sleeping in quicksand, and that's actually a very good analogy.
When the room is cool (65 or less) the mattress seems firmer when you first get into bed. Unfortunately in the middle of the night, you suddenly feel hot--the visco elastic foam really does heat up to your body temperature and somehow traps the heat until you actually are sweating.
My parents (ages 73 and 74) have had their Tempur-pedic for 1 year, and my mother hates it. Says sometimes it feels OK, other times it leaves her with back and neck pain.
Two of my friends have returned their mattresses, and they know others who hate their mattresses, too.
I am waiting for the 14 day recommended trial period before I can arrange for a return of our system, but in the meantime my husband is back to sleeping on the guest room mattress (age 15 years) and I'm suffering with the Tempur-pedic. I've even put a mattress pad on it to buffer the sinking (it helps, but not a lot) and awake many times during the night in discomfort, and awaken in the morning with lower back pain, which I haven't had in years.
My husband is a back sleeper--the mattress is bad for this. I'm a side and stomach sleeper--the mattress is bad for this, too. What else is there? Well, Flobeds, at www.flobeds.com, manufacturers of latex foam rubber mattresses that come in panel layers. You order specific firmness for the layers and the company works with you until you get the firmness you desire. They are 100% guaranteed satisfaction or your money-back, so they are the next step for us.
Also, I was told by Brookstone that Tempur-pedic's Customer Service was "a bit snotty", and unfortunately I found out that this is true. When the company called to arrange for delivery I said how surprised I was that they'd be delivering in 7 days of my purchase because I was told 21 days--the answer I got was silence, and then when I said, "Hello?" the rep actually sighed and said, "Yes?" in a rude, world-weary way that one might use with a misbehaving child. No need for that.
Anyway, my system is going back, and I can't wait. This thing cost me $2,100.00 and it's a total gimmicky piece of crap.
(P.S. last night I had to use a pillow and a bath towel on my side to keep from sinking all the way down to the polyurethane foam layer!)
UPDATE: 12/15/03 Although we repeatedly tried to sleep in the $2,100 Tempur-pedic, after an hour or so, were were in such pain we couldn't take it anymore, and then moved to the 15-year-old guest room mattress on the floor. We couldn't wait until our new latex Flobed arrived. So far, we're pretty much OK with our Flobed, just moving the firmness panels around until we get the right feel.
