A few weeks ago, I realized that my chronic back and hip pain might be caused by my 7 year old mattress. After crawling out of the "hole" in my mattress every morning and not being able to bend over and touch my toes, I decided something had to be done! My husband and I went shopping with the plan to buy a cheap but firm mattress and place a foam mattress topper on it and we'd be good to go! We found the perfect mattress for $500, but decided to just look "one more place". The salesman at Slumberland suggested we try the Tempur Pedic. I had heard of the brand and all the benefits, but never thought I would spend that kind of money on a mattress. Well, after he had us lay on the bed for about 10 minutes, I knew I had to have it! My husband said he would pay whatever it costs if it would help my pain go away. (Not because he cares so much, he just doesn't want to hear me moaning and groaning anymore!)
We have had the bed about a week now. The first morning I woke up, I could actually bend all the way over! A miracle! (Mind you, I'm not that old!) I could still feel a tightness in my lower back, but it seems to be getting better every day. I have not noticed the bed being "hot" like others have said. We did purchase the $75 mattress cover that says it "Sleeps cool". I can't believe how well I sleep every night. I used to toss and turn and wake up about every hour. I still wake up a couple times a night, but I am a very light sleeper and I have a husband who snores, a dog and 2 kids who sometimes feel the need to tell me how much they love me a 2 AM. I must sleep very well because my covers are hardly messed up at all in the morning, I can tell I haven't been moving around all night.
The salesman did warn us about the smell and it did smell, but for less than a day. It was almost gone by the end of the day. He also told us to let our kids walk on the mattress when we got it to help break it in. It is VERY firm when it arrives, but softens up fairly quickly.
In the end, this bed was worth the price. I am much happier and have more energy during the day. My body doesn't hurt nearly as much and the severe pain in my hips is gone.
The bed is fairly tall, I kind of wish we had gotten the low profile box spring. We had a tall bed previously, but this one is about 1-2 inches taller and our dog has a hard time jumping up on it.
