| 1GQ's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System |
Special Notes:
This is a review of the Tempur-Pedic Deluxe Swedish Mattress; the middle model. Please do not confuse with the Standard Swedish Mattress or the Celebrity Swedish Mattress.
My 30 day experience:
The day the mattress arrived I was leaving on a week long business trip. This was convienent since they usually have a strong odor that takes weeks to completely go away. I bought this model as part of a good faith agreement between TempurPedic and I over a dispute with the Celebrity mattress I had which this one replaces. I wrote an indepth review on the Celebrity at http://www.epinions.com/content_158673440388.
First thing I noticed about this mattress was how low too the ground it was compared to the my former Celebrity model. Compared to a standard mattress its about the same profile (maybe slightly shorter than modern mattresses) with the TempurPedic (high profile) base. Concerns over the look were quickly over shadowed by pure bliss once I layed on the mattress. The bed instantly molded to my body and I felt like I was floating. Don't confuse this with being soft, actually the mattress was a little firm. I was pleasantly surprised that the mattress worked so well as the Celebrity model too weeks to start to become effective. The one thing I noted is this bed was manufactured in October this year and comes with the new revised warranty card and literature whereas the Celebrity I had came with the old obosolete warranty card and literature.
Standing 5'11" and weighing in at 168lbs I'm on the lighter side of the scale for an adult male my height. I also tend to be "cool"; you know the person always complaining about AC being too low at work. The mattress was surprisingly very responsive to my body weight/heat. Over the course of the next two weeks I find that this mattress has definately improved the quality of my sleep as well as help alieviating my neck and back pain which is why I bought the Celebrity model to begin with.
I define quality of sleep as number of deep sleep hours. Before the TempurPedic mattress I was averaging 4 hours, when I bought the Celebrity bed I was up too 4.5 hours, and now I'm at roughly 6 hours. Many have stated feeling warm or hot during their sleep, personally I haven't experienced this as my body temperature tends too run cool.
Over the course of my experience with TempurPedic's Celebrity and now this Deluxe model I have gained some deep insight too how the mattresses actually work and some solid advice for those considering buying.
First the less tempur material the stiffer the bed will feel because theres less between you and the dense polyurethene foam base. The foam base is the same size on the standard and deluxe models however the deluxe has more tempur material which makes it softer and also provides more pressure relieving effect. The Celebrity model provides a larger polyurethene base and very generous amounts of tempur material. The Celebrity is without a doubt the softest of the three and really does feel more luxuriuos. So far I sound like the sales person and commercials but heres what I learned that you won't likely be told.
The sales persons would have you believe that regardless of which mattress you buy you will sleep the best night ever. That is the farthest thing from the truth. There are two factors that will play the most significant roles in determining this. Your body weight and temperature. Each bed has its own distinct thickness with the standard being just thicker than a futon. As you can imagine a heavy person would crush the standard mattress with weight alone. Now factor in temperature; the tempur material is heat activated and molds more with increased heat.
When I say mold its the same as those whom say they sink into the mattress. Ideally the mattress will only mold enough too relieve pressure off your body without you sinking to the point its hugging you. If this happens you either weigh too much for the model you have and/or your body temperature runs too hot cause the tempur material to react.
If you read the reviews on the site and on the net you will come to the same conclusion I did from personal experience. If your heavy go with the deluxe or celebrity, if your average or light go with the deluxe. I personally haven't tried the standard but based on my experience and facts I've read it wouldn't pay too buy one.
Ok so your average weight but tend to run hot. How do you overcome the excessive molding and overheating others have experienced. Simple. To reduce the effectiveness of the tempur material add more layers between you and the tempur material. You can do this in the form of bed sheets. Add layers of bed sheets till your comfortable. If you still have trouble with sinking/hugging which causes overheating then consider the Celebrity model which has a 1-inch thick comfort foam pillow top which barriers you and the tempur material. The pillow top is what really killed the Celebrity for me; I neither weighed enough or generate enough heat to activate the tempur material under the pillows of comfort foam.
On the other extreme if you run too cool then the deluxe is the model for you as the tempurpedic terry cloth cover can be removed and you can replace it with a more breatheable bed sheet; think high thread count like in the 600+ range. There expensive but trust me once you've gone 600+ you'll never go back to Kmart brand :D
Personally I have replaced the TempurPedic cover with a Protect-a-Bed mattress cover (to protect against spilled liquids, etc)and a Bed, Bath, & Beyond brand hotel quality 800 thread count sheet and am very happy with the setup.
One last note. If you buy bed sheets make sure you get atleast 16" deep pocket for the Deluxe model and 22" pocket for the Celebrity for a comfortable fit. Remember they will likely shrink a little once washed. TempurPedic's literature recommends 13" deep; trust me they're wrong.
In conclusion I higly recommend the Deluxe model but caution that there are many variables including personal taste. Make sure you buy it from somewhere that offers the 90 day trial period with no more than a $150 restocking fee incase you don't like it; you'll likely have to pay s/h charges in addition. Also be sure you won't get charged return shipping charges just in case. Oh yeah almost forgot, even though your not going too find a published discount most retailers will throw in a $200 credit towards other TempurPedic products especially now that xmas is around the corner. Just tell em you saw an ad from another store offer $200 for accessories. This will cover the special wood foundation box which costs $225.
