| teamw23's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System |
Our old mattress was starting resemble the grand canyon, with peaks and valleys and quite an unusual geography all around. When my wife started experiencing lower back pain and some stiffness getting up even though she is only in her Mid-30s, we knew it was time to start shopping for a new bed.
Because of her back issues, my wife really wanted to try out the Tempur-Pedic bed. So we went into the Healthy Back store and they had them all set up for us to try out.
They come in various firmness levels just like regular bedding now, there isn't just one firmness level for the tempur-pedic beds. Lying on them for the first time I didn't really notice much difference. I was sort of like "so what is the big deal with this, it's nice but doesn't feel all that much different than a regular bed." But my wife seemed to really like it, and I thought it was certainly comfortable.
When I found out how much they cost, I was significantly less enthusiastic, but she seemed to really think it would help her back, so being the good husband, I went along with the idea and we bought one.
We opted for the new "European firm" version, which is the firmest version they make and is apparently a new product, which has only been on sale in the U.S. for a few months as of this writing.
Although it is the same size and shape as the bed we replaced, there are a number of things about this mattress that are very different from a regular bed. The main issue is that the foam stuff is designed to respond to both HEAT and pressure, so you aren't supposed to put anything other than a top sheet on the mattress to interfere with the heat transfer. So no mattress protection pads, no electric blankets etc. Also, the bed will stop working right if the temperature in the room falls into the low 60's, it's supposed to stay at least 65 degrees for optimum comfort, below that it starts getting hard with the foam essentially freezing up. If you like sleeping with the window open even when there is snow on the ground, this may not be the bed for you.
So now we have had it about six weeks. It took a little getting used to, but it really does work as advertised. This mattress is just plain awesome. We are both getting the best sleep. I'm noticing that I have more dreams and more vivid dreams than I used to (more REM sleep) and I don't wake up stiff at all. I am feeling more rested and refreshed in the morning. It supports your entire body evenly, with your weight evenly distributed all across every part of the surface of the bed, with no pressure points, no sagging, no high spots. The bed just conforms to your shape and then bounces back again a few seconds after you get out of it.
If you used to toss and turn, you won't any more, you just sort of sink and settle into it in whatever position you find comfortable and then you stay that way all night.
This thing costs a boatload of money but it's worth it. For once, you can actually believe the hype. It's a noticeable improvement not only from the grand canyon bed we ditched, but also from sleeping in decent regular beds as well. We were doing some work on the house and had to decamp to a guest bedroom for a few nights, and there was a noticeable difference in sleep quality between that bed and the Tempur-Pedic, even though there was nothing wrong with the mattress in our guest bedroom.
Personally, I lead a pretty busy life and often don't have the luxury of devoting a full 8 hours to sleeping. This bed makes sure that whatever time I do devote to sleeping gets me the maximum amount of rest possible, and that is worth a lot to me, so I think I actually got my money's worth despite the eye-popping price.
Oh we also bought the matching pillows and they work as advertised as well.
Buy one!
