I have not written a review in quite some time. However, SAMMY HAGAR HAS A NEW CD!!!, I just HAVE to write one! I’ll begin with a quick summary – this CD has some really great songs on it – the rest are basic, average Sammy. I like the CD immensely. I have honestly listened to it at least 20 times since I first downloaded the pre-release version off of Napster – hundreds of times if you count the times that I fell asleep with it on repeat. Recently even MORE frequently since I picked up the CD last week upon its official release. I will definitely and proudly support the newly formed “Cabo Wabo Music” Record Label with my $14.99!
I can already tell that my prose is week from lack of exercising it (I’ve been programming a lot lately), so please bear with my unusual lack of writing excellence <grin>.
Sammy Hagar has been releasing albums since the mid-70’s, I own all of them and I have reviewed most of them here on epinions.com. The content of this CD is not at all surprising to me – it mixes his older mellow-rock style with his newer “PARTY!” attitude. As I often do, I’ll express my opinion on a song-by-song basis and then summarize my thoughts at the end. If you don’t give a rat’s behind about my mini-reviews then jump ahead to my conclusion and save a few minutes! Though, if you truly care about discovering the thoughts and feelings that I took time to put to my keyboard then, please, continue.
Sammy Hagar – Ten 13 – Officially Released 10/24/2000 – 11 Tracks – 47:30 total playing time (pre-release slipped onto Napster: 9/23/200)
1. Shaka Doobie (The Limit) 3:18 This song is nice, fast-paced and energetic. Unfortunately, however, it is not his best work and should probably not be leading off the CD. However, it is essentially a spin-off of the style from his previous release, Red Voodoo, and that is probably why it is the lead-off song. I occasionally listen to Hagar’s CDs in succession – perhaps that is how they are meant to be enjoyed!
2. Let Sally Drive 4:39 Here is a song that sounds like it belongs on his solo release from 1987 (I Never Said Goodbye). It is heavy on the bass, which is almost overshadowing his screaming vocals. The song is about Sally driving like a maniac. Personally, I like it when girls drive fast and crazy, it most definitely reminds me of driving with my friend Stacey who I haven’t seen in a while – almost the same name too- haha.
3. Serious JuJu 3:48 This song brings the tone down to what I like to call mellow hard rock. Sammy telling a story / singling a song, with a guitar stringing in the background at the beginning. If I had to place this in his history it would have to be 1997’s Marching To Mars. It’s a good song and certainly worth a listen… You’ll find yourself screaming “Ju-Ju” when the time is right!
4. The Message 4:32 FINALLY, with “The Message” brings a new kind of Hagar – the Ten 13 style is presented! Though, looking at the credits in the CD Jacket Hagar did not write this song, Jesse Harms did. This is the only song on the CD that Hagar did not have at least a part in writing. I see why he chose to sing it though, as it sounds like it was written especially for his loud, soulful singing style. I like this song, the next song, however, is my favorite!
5. Deeper Kinda Love 4:19 <u>This song is awesome, awesome, AWESOME!!!!</u> It is by far my favorite song on the CD and I can play it over and over and over again! If you want a sample of the year-2000 Hagar this is it! It blends emotion and rock as only the Red Rocker can do it – incredible! Please take some time to listen to this song the next time you visit the music store at the local mall – you will want to buy the CD!
6. Little Bit More 3:36Little Bit More sings a lot like “Kama” the tribute to his newly born daughter in Marching to Mars - it really has deep meaning that can’t be missed by Hagar’s voice throughout the track. It’s about falling out of love a little bit at a time – a sad song, but a great song. This is my third favorite song on Ten 13 – it really makes you pay attention to the words, even if you do not normally listen to music that way, Sammy will bring you around with this song! Be warned, however, if you are in a relationship that is falling apart this song will most likely bring you to tears – I guarantee it.
7. Ten 13 4:34 October thirteenth is Hagar’s birthday – hence the album title. This song’s theme is, yep, you guessed it, “Happy Birthday To You!”. It’s not just about his birthday, though. In the album insert he says “… My birthday, your birthday… what’s the difference? [..] On this very special day, you’re brand new. Happy Birthday to You!” So, do you want a birthday song to play at the next birthday party you attend? Bring this CD and play this song – it ROCKS, ROCKS, ROCKS, as only Hagar can R*O*C*K!
8. Protection 4:43 This song is the most “hard-rock-style” song on the CD. To tell you the truth, that’s not my fancy, so this is my least-favorite song on this CD. It’s unfortunate, but each CD I have to pick a song that I like the least, and this is it. Fear not, however, it’s not so bad that I skip the track. I haven’t yet heard a Sammy song that made me even consider that un-holiest of acts!
9. 3 In The Middle 3:43 What? Is this the 70’s? Listening to this song you may think so! Super fast-paced, super-hard, super-“disco” rock! Listen to his 1979 Street Machine album and it will sound something like this. Crazy – the song is about being stuck in the middle. I say stuck the song itself is stuck in the 70’s! A truly interesting song that all die-hard Hagar fans will definitely appreciate.
10 The Real Deal 3:10 Here’s a ‘shortty’-but-goodie song, at just over three minutes in length. The song kind of brings the pace down from the last two songs to set up the super-slow “Tropic Of Capricorn’ to come next. You’ll get into the song, but before you know it, *poof*, it’s over. Fear not, fellow Hagar fanatic, the next song will not disappoint!
11. Tropic Of Capricorn This is definitely my second favorite song on the CD. If you’re a Hagar fan then you’re heard his “Flamingos Fly” song from the 1976 release, Nine On A Ten Scale This is a great song – especially sine I consider “Flamingos Fly” one of my favorite all-time Hagar tunes. Oddly, the song finishes then there is a short sub-track with what sounds like Sammy taking the sip of some of a Waborita made with his own Tequila, and then strumming for a little bit on that small Hawaiian guitar (the yeukaleilie [sp?]). Great way to end the CD – I can’t wait for his next one!
SHAUN’S SIMPLE CONCLUSION
If you are like me, listening to this song with make you want to do only one thing – Make sure the repeat button is on! If you are a die-hard Hagar fan then there is no doubt that you will own this CD. If you are just a casual listener, though, I still must recommend adding this CD to your collection because, yes, it just rocks that much. I know that my opinion is bias because I knew that I’d like the CD even before I listened to it, but still, I must share my opinion with the world. Have a listen, have a party, have some tequila, have a great time!
