Another - (Reply to this comment)

good review, little rebel. However, as far as Dr. Laura goes - well, like everything in life there are no positives. In every marriage, or relationship, there are white areas that shine, and black areas that cause unbelievable pain, but mostly there are gray areas. You feel comfortable with each other - try to overcome your deficiencies - and most of all, you accept what you cannot change - and if you cannot accept it, you get out of it.
Fortunately, little rebel, you are too much of an independent thinker to depend whole heartedly on Dr. Laura, or anyone else, to do your thinking for you.

The messenger of what, macresarf? Thanks for the thoughtful comment, even though it's rather a downer. You think stupid choices are always going to be inevitable, it seems, and I say it's a choice like Dr. Laura thinks. Just finished reading her previous book about women and honestly it was great advice. Review later. :-)

The Messenger of . . . (Reply to this comment)
by macresarf1
Dear jan: I don't much care for Dr. Laura either. She seems to believe that exceptions BECOME the rule. And she is right! But we all crave exceptions in our lives.
On the other hand, Sex IS a fact of life.
Now . . . marriage. If a marriage license in a so-called civilized country like our own required some actual training and renewal, it would be a step up for the evolutionary plane.
Too many unhappy people, too many unloved children, too many unwanted children, and increasingly too many brutalized and/or poverty blighted children.
Why should this be so with all our knowledge, institutes, studies psychologists and talk show hosts?
Decades ago, in Cleveland, I was on a bus. I noticed an advertisement, above the strap-hanger. It said (roughly): "Every day ______ children are born in America. More children mean MORE business!"
Truer words were never written in our land, and they will continue to be true until we collapse or explode from the collective pain. Those words are a large factor in the malaise which we find ourselves in, a few steps beyond the Mall.
Nice work.

Hey, perfectly all right and understandable. I haven't listened to her enough to form an opinion and was just reviewing her book as a book. I'm rather amused by these comments, I must say!
Thanks,

The Hero Complex, You Think? (Reply to this comment)

Oh well, leave it to "Dr." Laura (and you, too, of course :) to call 'em like she sees 'em!
Another top-notch review, and sounds like an interesting read, too. Take care,

Thanks, Glo, Barbara, gung and Rex! You're probably much more familiar with her than me, so I'm especially thankful you read and liked the review. Don't know yet if the mistakes struck a cord with any guy, though. Seems not!

I'll confess I skipped a tad towards the end, as it was more repetitive, but I figured it's geared towards desperate men more than me. :-)

You know, I did really like the book, but maybe 4 stars would make more sense since she misrepresents herself and is so obnoxious. :-)

Former Listener of Dr Laura (Reply to this comment)
by glomarrone
Hi,
I haven't read the book or anything that she's written but I used to listen to her on the radio until they took her off the air here. Sometimes I catch her when I'm in FL.
Good review as always. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I enjoyed it!

This man has simply not met one who was deserving of any less that gentlemanly conduct.

Thanks folks, I am eternally grateful.

I have to agree with (Reply to this comment)
by scmrak, in Books
prior comments. Great review, stupid topic.
I know hundreds of men and women with PhDs, none of them (in this country, anyway) call themselves "Dr. Sharon" or "Dr. John" (No, I don't know Mac Reveneau) except in the context of their expertise. This woman is no more qualified to speak on these subjects than am I.
I have no quarrel with people who want to express their opinions -- I have a great deal of problem with those who misrepresent themselves, whether through commission of a lie or omission of the truth, the latter of which applies in the case of "Dr. Laura."

Hey Justin, glad you liked it. The aforementioned sweetie thought I needed to include more specifics on how not to be "stupid," but I just said being aware of the problem will help a lot.

Thanks for appreciating the review. I admit I've hardly ever listened to her nor read her before and have heard about the nude photos, so maybe I could read this without a formed judgment and it helped me to focus on her message better. We all make mistakes when young, too.

Oops, I think you caught me at being stupid. I remember now that's what it said on the back flap and will change it. Thanks, Ada. :-) It doesn't take away from the helpfulness of the book, though.

Thorough review, as always! (Reply to this comment)
by AdaDavis
This is an excellent review of the book. One question: When did "Dr." Laura get a degree in psychotherapy? To the best of my knowledge her only advanced degree is a PhD in Kinestheseology. (That would qualify her to be a gym teacher.) I believe she has some certificates in family counseling, or some such, but no medical degree or formal training in psychology or sociology.
I know a lot of people with PhDs who would NEVER call themselves "Doctor" unless they were college professors, and the title was used in its academic sense. The fact that she wants to be called "Dr. Laura" is the first thing (of a long list) that really turned me off about her. I'm afraid the only thing I would do with one of her books is pick it up with tongs and drop it in the trash while holding my nose. But, hey, that's just me! Even gym teachers can have some worthwhile ideas about relationships, so who am I to judge the book by its ...author? ;-)
I do like your review, though!

Dr. Laura ? (Reply to this comment)
by derk99
First of all, she's not a doctor and secondly, she is a working mother who says women should not work. She preaches family values, yet has nude photos on the Web. She preaches relations with family, yet has not spoken to her own mother or sister in 20 years.
It goes on and on. This was a fine review, as usual, but consider the source when considering an author.
