Don't Bust My Balls!!!
Written: Apr 20 '07 (Updated Apr 20 '07)
Pros:A Buzzbait with even more chatter then before!
Cons:$7.50 can be swallowed up very quickly by a Pike or Pickerell.
The Bottom Line: This lure is great right out of the box, no tuning necessary. It is very loud, has a great long hook, and comes in the classic buzzbait colors.
The Terminator company has lead the fishing lure field with innovations and new designs for the past 15 years, especially with their Buzzbaits and Spinnerbaits. For many years the design of the Buzzbait never changed. While ugly in appearance, the design was simple. Shaped like a spinnerbait, the buzzbait has a skirted hook, a lead head, and a long wire shaft leading to a large flat blade that turns on top of the water. All at once just about every company who made Buzzbaits changed their designs. We saw in-line buzzers, double prop buzzers, triple prop buzzers, long wired buzzers, even longer wired buzzers, floating bladed buzzbaits, and probably a couple more that I have forgotten.
Design:
Terminator didn't have to change the original design very much to make their Ball Buster Buzzbait. The Head/Nose: They turned the lead head, or nose, upwards which helps in elevating the lure very quickly to the surface. This is helpful when fishing in very shallow water or in the muck. If you get a bunch of weeds or junk on your lure at the beginning of a cast as soon as it lands, the cast is ruined before it even really gets started. Turning the nose upwards on this lure is a great new design and should help fishermen keep their balls and blades clean. They also went with just one eye on this lure opposed to the usual dual eyed heads that are on most Buzzbaits. This makes sense because the single eye is on the bottom of the head where it will be visible to the fish. Most strikes come from underneath using this Buzzbait.
Hook:I like what Terminator has done with the Hook on this Buzzbait. They added an extra long Mustad Needle Point Hook in the construction of this lure. I am a big fan of using trailer hooks with my spinnerbaits but not so much for Buzzbaits because they seem to get hung up more on weeds, sticks and other structure. On Buzzbaits with short hooks you almost have to use a trailer hook or you will miss many strikes and hits from fish. By lengthening out the hook on this lure, you won't miss as many hits as you would with a shorter hook.
The Blade is 24K gold and nickel-plated. It will not rust or tarnish or fade. Mine are just as shinny as when I first took them out of the pack. Even my aluminum blades will fade and lose their shine over time or after many fish. These blades have a very aggressive bend that is more then the common 90 degree bend. This is said to give it more splash and cause more of a commotion.
THE BALL: The biggest innovation to the Buzzbait with this lure is the nickel plated brass ball added to the titanium wire shaft after the blade. Every time the blade turns it hits the ball making even more noise and commotion then other buzzbaits. This is a real attention getter.
Features:
---Extra Long and Sharp Mustad Needle Point Hook.
---Highly Reflective Silichrome Skirt.
---Aggressively Bent Blade.
---Titanium Wire Frame- unbendable.
---New metal Ball, which gets busted on every turn of the blade.
Colors:
The Ball Buster only comes in four different colors. They are:
-Black with Blue SilaChrome
-Bright White with Silver SilaChrome
-Chartreuse & White with Silver SilaChrome
-Chartreuse with Silver SilaChrome
I have only found this buzzbait in 3/8 ounce size.
This is a great Buzzbait for several reasons. When you are throwing a buzzbait to catch Largemouth Bass, you are trying to make as much noise with the lure as possible. I only use buzzbaits in very shallow water where I want to keep the lure out of the weeds or brush. This lure makes a ton of noise. A regular buzzbait makes a ton of noise, this one makes even more with the clicking ball and blade. When fishing in the shallows for bass, they are usually hiding in the thick cover or behind weeds, brush, stumps, or anything they can. They have to hide because if they don't they are sitting ducks to their predators in the sky such as Ospreys and Eagles. If they can't see your lure they might not know its even out there. The buzzbait brings them in by churning up the surface and making added noise, they will quickly investigate any disturbance on the surface. It imitates a fleeing minow on the surface, a snake, and mostly a frog scooting across the top of the water. If a big bass is in the area, it won't be able to resist a nice churning buzzbait.
Price: This is the hardest part for the fisherman to swallow. The MSRP for this lure is $8.99. You can find them at bass Pro Shops and Tackle Wharehouse for $7.49. I guess that is the cost of titanium, nickel, brass, and innovation these days.
