I once saw a movie based on a Stephen King story called "Sometimes They Come Back." In this movie a group of very mean, but very dead, teenagers comes back to haunt and terrorize a man who knew them when he was kid. Well it appears that a local colony of ants must have seen the movie as well, and they liked it so much that they are acting it out, against me. I had earlier in the Spring dealt with a colony of ants that was attempting to lay claim to my kitchen. The product that I used was effective, and got rid of the insurgents fairly quickly. However, a few months later, in the heat of the Summer, a new group of insurgents made themselves known to me, and began to invade my kitchen again. The ant killing product that I had used before had expired, and was no longer doing the job. I went to the local hardware store to buy the product that had worked for me before. However, that brand of ant bait was no longer there. They shelf was empty. However, in the space that was adjacent to the location of the product I had previously used, I found a small box labeled Terro Liquid Ant Killer. Although I had never heard of Terro before, I learned that it has been the nation's number one seller for 85 years, and that it is made in the good old U.S.A. by the Senoret Chemical Company located in the great state of Missouri. I decided to give it a try. Read on and see if you feel Terro Liquid Ant Killer sounds like a product that you would like to use to solve your own household ant problem.
I have children running around the house and numerous pets. Obviously I would be concerned regarding the safety of my family and pets, even more so than the unpleasant situation of living with household ants. According to the Terro website, this product can be used safely around children and pets. The inert ingredients, which make up 94.6 % of Terro Liquid Ant Killer, are sweet food-based substances that are similar to the syrup that one would use on pancakes. The active ingredient, which makes up 5.4 % of Terro Liquid Ant Killer is Borax, which the EPA claims is one of the safest and least toxic chemicals for the environment.
What kind of ants does Terro Liquid Ant Killer eliminate? According to the Terro Website, Terro Liquid Ant Killer is effective in killing just about any kind of ant that you are going to find in you home, especially the ones that are attracted to sweets. That is very good news. The small box that the Terro Liquid Ant Killer comes in can also serve as a bait trap. There is a small one ounce bottle of clear liquid ant killer in the box. The directions on the box suggest that one can cut the box into small squares and place a couple of drops of the Terro Liquid Aunt Killer on the cut up squares. The liquid is very sticky, so keep this in mind. The reader will recall that I mentioned above that the Terro liquid is sort of like pancake syrup, and it can be messy to deal with. I learned this after spilling it on the kitchen counter by the sink and the window sill.
The best place to put the Terro Liquid Ant Killer is in the specific areas where you have seen ants strolling by. Ants lay down a chemical trail which other members of a colony follow, sort of like a chemical highway. If you place the ant baits along the highway, the ants will go right to them. I was amazed at the number of ants that flocked to the ant baited cut up box that the Terro liquid came in. I was very surprised at the number of ants that were attracted to the baits, and how they appeared to love the sweet liquid ant killer. They flocked to it in amazing numbers during the first day that I put the bait out. They must have gone back to their colony to brag about their discovery to the rest of the inhabitants. I was pleased that they were enjoying themselves and inviting their friends and relatives to partake in the feast.
Well how does Terro Liquid Ant Killer work? The ants are attracted to the sweet liquid, and they fill up on it, and bring it back to the colony or nest. They share the Terro with the rest of the members of the colony, including her majesty the queen. The Borax interferes with the functioning of the digestive system of the ants. Each ant that consumes the bait will die within 24 to 48 hours. Depending on the size of the colony, they whole nest can be wiped out within a couple of days, to a week or so. Even when you no longer see any ants, it is advisable to keep the bait out for about 4 days after the last ant is seen so as to be certain that all of the ants in the colony have been eliminated.
A few bits of helpful information to keep in mind when using Terro Liquid Ant Killer is that it is most attractive to ants if there is nothing else that is even more attractive to them. Thus, it is very important to be sure that there are no competing sources of food that the ants might prefer, such as an uncovered sugar bowl, or a pet's food dish. Make sure that you do not have other food sources readily available to the ants, and they will really go for the Terro Liquid Ant Killer. Another point to keep in mind is that because the Terro liquid is food based, and is sort of similar to pancake syrup, it is most attractive to the ants when it is in a fresh liquid form, and not old and dried up. Thus, in the hot summer months, I would suggest setting out a few drops of fresh bait first thing in the morning and replacing the previous days bait, as it may be dry and unappealing to the ants. Another important point to keep in mind is that this liquid ant bait is sticky, and it is not all that easy to clean up when it has dried on something. If you happen to spill some, which I did, it is very easy to clean up with a wet paper towel if this is done immediately. If you wait for it to dry before cleaning, then I would suggested putting some water on it and letting it sit for an hour or so, and then try cleaning it. Other cleansers can of course also be used in the same way. Another tip to keep in mind is to not cut up the box and use it as a bait station. The instructions say to do this. However, then you do not have a box to store the unused Terro Liquid Ant Killer in. I used the plastic tops on top of used milk containers as little reusable bait stations. I also used waxed paper which I cut up into small three inch squares, and they worked great as bait stations. I had tried using aluminum foil, but for some reason the ants seemed to prefer the drops of bait that were on the waxed paper instead of the aluminum foil. To each his own.
Although the package indicates that it is safe to use Terro Liquid Ant Killer around pets and children, there is also a warning to be observed. The package indicates that one should not use it in a place where it can come into contact with the foods that one feeds to their pets, and obviously to be sure that it does not come in contact with the food that one is going to be eating or feeding the family as well. Thus, make sure you do not place the ant bait liquid in a spot where there is a chance of contamination of your own family food sources or that of your pets. Safe and appropriate disposal methods for unused Terro Liquid Ant Killer is also provided. Another nice thing about this product is that it is very long lasting, and can be stored for about two years. Just like any other food based product, it begins to lose its appeal and attractiveness with time. Since it is so inexpensive, I would not try to use the same Terro liquid for years, and I would suggest getting a new bottle once a year.
The bottom line for me is that I was very pleased with how quick and effective this product is. Terro Liquid Ant Killer really works. It is safe and effective, and not overly toxic to the environment, the way some insect killers are. I was thoroughly pleased with this product, and will use it again. If you do not want to go through the trouble of setting out fresh ant baits every day, there is a simpler option which I discovered after buying the Terro Liquid Ant Killer, and that is to use Terro Liquid Ant Baits. These are simple little plastic traps, and they contain the same Terro Liquid that is found in the small squeeze bottle that came with the Terro Liquid Ant Killer.
Well I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my review, but now if you will excuse me, I must get back to practicing my guitar. Hopefully, nothing else will bug me.
