I know I do have this review in the wrong category and I plan to change it as soon as I find a place for it or better yet as comments are left...I should write more about Tetra being the best fish food for my Beta Fish and how I believe that the Beta fish I've had in the past have lived almost 3 years due to the nutritious value of this food. I just wanted to get the word out about a certain plant/fish product some stores are selling that tell you not to feed your fish because it eats from the roots of the plant in the vase.
Has anyone ever heard of the latest fish/plant craze? Well, I just today saw a pathetic sight at one of my friend's houses. It's a glass vase about a foot high with a beautiful Peace Lily floating in the water at the top with the roots dangling here and there. At the bottom of this vase were pretty colored stones and marbles. Sound pathetic yet? No... but wait...there's more.
Add a Chinese fighting fish called a Beta fish laying on its back looking lethargic and dead as a doornail.(well he was eventually.) My friend told me she bought this entire piece, fish and all at a florist shop and was told that the fish eats off the roots of the plant. Also that the water didn't have to be changed for four months. Now can you believe this? Four months of icky water and only eating off the roots of a Peace Lily? Shame on this person!!!!!!!
This is a lot of nonsense to me and a completely false marketing gimmick on the florist's part. A Beta cannot live in a vase for a long time with no food. For one thing, a Beta fish is a living thing and must eat a diet of Tetra Flakes and Tetra Nature's Delica Bloodworms at least once a week. Any fish must have their water changed at least weekly depending on the size of the aquarium. In this case it is a foot-high vase...it may have to be changed more frequently depending on the color of the water. The water must be DE-chlorinated with a chlorine remover found in most pet stores.
On the other hand, this crafty idea of a Peace Lily and Beta fish vase is a great idea for a gift if you remember that fish are not just decorations, they are a living thing and a pet. If this unusual fish/plant thing is your cup of tea for an ideal gift for someone on your Christmas or birthday list, then follow proper instructions...not the instructions that a florist or sales girl will give to you.
Wash the roots of the Peace Lily thoroughly of all grime and dirt until completely clean. Use dechlorinated water and Tetra Fish Flakes and Tetra Nature's Delica Bloodworms. Remember...the fish DO NOT survive on the roots alone. They may find a bit of infrasona from the roots but heavens...not enough to survive the time the florist told my friend it would. These fish get Popeye and they die a premature death.
Remember to never put any other fish in the bowl with a Beta fish. These fish are very territorial and will fight to death their roommate. Place proper plastic trays with holes, the kind that come with potted plants. This keeps the lily from sinking deeper into the vase. Keep the vase out of direct sunlight. Placing it under a lamp is great fun watching the Beta fish swim. Go by your instincts... as long as the fish is swimming around, he is doing fine. If you don't follow "their" instructions and heed my advice instead, your Beta fish can live up to 3 years.
By the way, my friend's fish died. Sometimes it's only common sense to go by your own instincts to know that a fish must be fed and needs its water changed. Don't listen to a marketing gimmick from someone whose only concern is the almighty buck! Oh....don't forget to use Tetra Fish Flakes and Tetra Nature's Delica Bloodworms and change that water at least once a week or whenever you see it's cloudy in color. My "Jangles" Beta-beauty is doing just fine on his Tetra diet and regular changes of dechlorinated water.
