In my experience using Tetra Whisper Filters at the fish store were I work, I have found that whisper filters are a fairly decent power filter. There are a few benefits that can makes this filter appealing such as the high flow rate and the large media space. Having this large media space allow you to use several different types of media. Tetra filters also are pretty good at starting them self, but I usually have to add a little bit of water inside the filter to get it going. After that everything is fine. I've seen it take some pretty nasty tanks, and make them clear in very little time. Another benefit is that they are usually pretty inexpensive. The adjustable flow rate can also be nice for those who require different levels of water flow (such as breeding tanks, saltwater). The flow rate can also make it pretty easy to use on any size tank (with in certain limits).

The only problems I have with Tetra Filters is that I find their smoke color kind of unattractive, sometimes when the get old they start to leak, and if you are the type who just like to insert a filter and not have to deal with the mess, this may not be such a good filter for you. This is a great filter for those who like to make their own media though!

One last benefit is that it is very easy to find replacement parts.

Although I personally don't prefer Tetra Filters, I would recommend this product for saltwater and freshwater due to its above average quality and performance.

The new tetra Tetratec filters are also very nice (there made by the same company), and more visually appealing.
