Back on November 19, 1977, the night before my seventh birthday, I accidentally got a peek at my birthday present -- a fishtank. I had everything I needed to set the tank up, including fish food. I remember it was TetraMin, and it was the predominant fish food back then. The now defunct Sears Pet Store would carry TetraMin food and nothing but, and that's what I would buy every time I needed food.
But with any product, TetraMin has had to deal with it's share of competitors. It seems that with the displacement of small pet shops for the mega-warehouse stores like Petco and Petsmart, an explosion of competing products has occurred, bringing about lower quality, lower priced items. Everything from cat litter to, yes, fish food.
TetraMin has always had the essential ingredients that tropical fish need, as well as the vitamins and minerals that bring out their color, and therefore their health. The proper nutrition is also important in boosting a fish's immune system to prevent common aquarium diseases such as ick and cottonmouth.
These are important differences between TetraMin and cheaper, imitation fish foods that have popped up on the market. The differences can be very subtle, but it's worth spending the extra money and having the peace of mind in knowing that your fish are "eating their broccoli" instead of settling for fast, cheap food.
TetraMin can also help maintain good water quality in the tank by not clouding the water or toxifying the water through decay. Of course, it is important to remember that constant overfeeding of the fish can lead to an abnormally high amount of decaying fish food on the bottom of the tank that will add nitrates and nitrites to the water, no matter what quality the food is.
So as an experienced aquarist of 23 years, I recommend TetraMin over other fish foods that have flooded the market. TetraMin has provided quality fish food for 40 years and is still the best around. Though it may cost a little more, it is worth it to know that your fish are getting the steak tartar (with a side of broccoli) of fish food.
