| momsworkinlate's Full Review: Thai Dish |
This past weekend my best friend and I were found frolicking on the soft white sand at Pompham Beach State Park in Maine. Watching children jumping waves and collecting sea shells on the shore as we made adult sand sculptures the day flew by.
We were in Maine for a short visit to see my mother and were enjoying an afternoon with our boys. Aww did I forget to mention my best friend was my husband? The children? Three of them belong to us (or we to them?). The adult sand castle was really only one and safely knocked down before inquiring little eyes could cast their questioning gaze upon it. :sigh: The responsibilities of being “growd ups.”
I do have to say we really did have a wonderful family day. This time we were able to have some quiet adult time and :chuckle: share some jokes while the boys were safely out of ear shot but in viewing area. A day and evening like this is good medicine. It helps couples to remember who they are and who they were.
On our way out the door that morning I told Mom not to worry about dinner we didn't know what time we'd be back. Arriving back in town around five-thirty we decided Mom would watch the boys and order in Domino’s Pizza. The boys were thrilled as they've never tasted Domino’s Pizza before - but have seen the advertisements. My husband and I cleaned up and headed out the door - alone!
Where would we go? Well, to be honest with you after a recent outing to the Outback Steakhouse my husband suggested we start to rediscover our adventurous selves and begin dinning out at new restaurants in order to try out new things.
Being a creature of habit at first I balked. “What are we going to do? Buy dinner and have the kids hate the food? I’m not wasting money out on the kids to not eat.” Then with a glint in my eye I said “Of coarse if your parents want to sit with the kids....”
Move ahead three weeks and here were. Two grown-ups with no children to worry about feeding. We really were free to try something new! Thursday night when we had arrived in town my husband went out and picked up some KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) for the boys and I. He had noticed a Thai restaurant and he stopped in there for some quick takeout. More on that soon...
Thai Dish of Boston
Thai Dish is where we went on our date. Upon entering the restaurant I have to admit I felt under dressed. I was wearing jean shorts, sneakers and a nice top thinking this was a fast food type establishment. Thank goodness this was Maine, believe me when I say you can get away with a lot here...
We were greeted promptly by the matre’de and seated at a beautifully set table. It’s been some time since I’ve been in a restaurant with linen napkins folded nicely in the center of each place setting. Green and rose were the predominant colors blended with natural tones and gold accents, which were found in many interesting and beautiful decorations.
We were presented with stylish menu’s and our water goblets were filled while we were told of “Today’s Special.” Taking a few minutes to look over the menu I have to admit I was very impressed. I was also surprised to see that all entrees were priced at $14.95 or less (several as low as $6.95).
I will admit my husband did have to entice me to this spot by picking up a take out order for himself the night before. :chuckle: His was wise to bring a sample the menu and entice me into trying a bite. I did and I wanted seconds...
Thai food is unlike other cuisine that I have tasted. Many people confuse Thai with other oriental food. While you will find some similar dishes and ingredients i.e. rice, noodles & vegetables you will find the flavor is really quite different.
**Quote directly from the Thai Dish menu**
"Alone among all countries in Southeast Asia, Thailand has never been colonized by any European or Asian power. consequently, Thai cuisine is something uniquely Thai".
Thai cuisine varies from bland to very spicy & hot. While dinning my husband and I smiled as we overhead a conversation at a nearby table. There was a young couple enjoying soup.
When the waiter stopped by to see if they were enjoying it they asked him on a scale of 1-3 how hot (spicy) would he rate the soup. He laughed and said “zero.”
Looking somewhat concerned regarding the rest of their meal they quickly asked the waiter to please tell the chef not to make their food too spicy! He assured them he would take care of the matter immediately.
Thai food may appear similar to oriental food but I can assure you the taste is quite different. Thai cuisine has been known by some to be very sweet. I would have to say of the dishes I sampled they lean more toward hot & spicy than sweet. However may be a matter of taste...
I should add lest I be considered remiss in not mentioning that it is common for sugar is added to many Thai dishes. If you are diabetic or have another sugar/food related problem then dinning at the Thai Dish may not be a wise thing for you to do. You may request that no sugar be added however I would not want to risk my health or that of someone I love in order to have a tasty meal.
The time arrived for us to place our dinner order. Would it be Angels Wings (boneless chicken wings filled with stuffing) or Steamed Butterflies (steamed wonton filled with chicken and peanuts)??? Passing on those choices we decided upon a Beef Satay. The Satay was tender, mouth watering beef skewed and grilled with Thai herbs. This was served with a peanut sauce that became increasingly hotter the longer it stayed on your tongue. Along with the peanut sauce we were served a cucumber sauce which also had onion mixed in. We felt in this case the peanut sauce was the hot sauce and the cucumber was the sweet.
Thai Dish offers several soups with ingredients that range from mushrooms, scallops, squid and chilies. Salads include Topless Shrimp which the menu lists as “blushing” in a lime sauce. All salads include duck, beef, shrimp or chicken with a variety of sauces and greens. Many contain peanuts.
Specialties & Seafood Choo-chi, choo chi coo! I’m sorry - lost myself for a minute there. Several dishes contain choo-chi (curry & lime). If you're a person to enjoy an orgy perhaps you will be sated with a choice from this menu. Here you will be pleased when your eyes gaze upon the Seafood Orgy a delectable mix of scallops, shrimp, squid and mussels. You might choose to proceed with caution when you run across the Drunken Chicken although as a meal it does appear to be on the tame side with its ground chicken breast, green beans and spicy sauce.
Thai dishes often consist of curry. Curry as we learned at Thai Dish are simply any meat cooked in coconut milk and flavored with chili. Because there is a variety of chili’s you will discover the hot taste blended with the sweetness of the sweet coconut milk in a variety of curry dishes. i.e. Yellow or Red Curry. Matsaman (Mmmm - that’s a man?) is a curry flavored with red chili & Persian spices along with potato and onion slices and lest we forget a favorite additive the peanut...
Vegetable lovers will find something here to satisfy their hunger. Some spicy tofu or bean sprout will entice anyone into the Secret Garden of love. Vampire types should however proceed with caution as most of these dishes are heavily seasoned with garlic.
Shaking my head with some confusion I read some dinner entree’s made for those of us who love our meat and veggies. The Rama Garden which I presume is actually a deity or hero of Hindu’s includes beef. I was under the understanding Hindu’s worshipped cows. I'm obviously missing something here and will have to look more into this mystery.
Thai Dish also offers a variety of noodle & rice dishes. Noodles are of the rice and egg & mung bean origin and rice itself may be steamed or fried. This can be served with tofu, beef, pork or chicken, or crabmeat. Sauces may consist of oyster, minced garlic with black bean.
I selected Pork Pad Thai for my entree. This consisted of slices of pork, which was stir fried with eggs, scallions and bean sprouts. Served with rice noodles and topped off with ground roasted peanuts. The Pad Thai had a nice flavor neither too hot nor sweet. Personally I could do without the peanuts however as that is part of the dish I and the object of the evening was to venture into new realms I did eat and enjoy the meal as served.
I cannot remember what my husband ate as his entree. I did enjoy a bite or two and it was very good. He chose something hot and spicy. I think the next time we venture to a Thai restaurant I will try something similar to his meal.
Alcohol is served at the Thai Dish. After witnessing the diners at a nearby table (one who gleefully clucked at the waiter :rolling eyes:) I will admit my husband and I were happy to enjoy a new non alcoholic drink Limeade. The Limeade actually tasted very good with the Thai cuisine.
Upon arriving that evening we noticed a sign in the foyer that stated Fried Ice Cream was the special dessert for the evening. Often we pass on dessert but as this was a special night out for the two of us we gave in to our curiosity and desire to expand and try something new. We each ordered a Fried Ice Cream for dessert. Mine drizzled with chocolate sauce and my husbands with strawberry. Both topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
The Fried Ice Cream was not quite as good as I had hoped. The ice cream is wrapped in dough (can you say “fried dough” from the fair?) and then deep-fried. It does make a pretty presentation with the rounded golden scoop in the ice cream dish with its toppings. I however can't get past the (can you say “fried dough” from the fair)? feeling. This is one dessert we do not plan on repeating. I’m uncertain of what other desserts are offered as they were not listed on our menu.
What was our overall impression of the Thai Dish Restaurant of Boston? We’re planning on going back for seconds the next time we’re in town. Unfortunately there are not any Thai restaurants in our area. Perhaps in New Haven or Hartford. I know we plan on looking into this.
I would recommend the Thai Dish Restaurant of Boston for anyone feeling adventurous. Dressy casual clothing would be appropriate. I think most would feel out of place in jeans or shorts :blushing: Plan on spending and hour and a half thru two hours from appetizer thru dessert.
We really enjoyed our get out of the rut - try something new date. The restaurant was clean. Deco and dim lighting set the mood. Service was outstanding from entry to exit.
