... golems... my first introduction to the concept was in DC's tale of the grim knight of Gotham, in Batman # early 530ish or so, as part of a two-parter story about a golem come to life... in which I also learned the meanings of the Hebrew words emeth and meth...

I'm Urb's friend. And it *is* a lovely review. I'd already meant to pick up the book in paperback but now I have to go get it tomorrow...
Hoping to remain interesting for a very long time,

And now you've convinced me to read something ... (Reply to this comment)
by AuntieEmma
I was trying to clear out some of my clutter and picked up an old NY-er (they do pile up) and took a quick glance at the table of contents to make sure there wasn't something I really wanted to read there before I threw it away. I saw the name Michael Chabon, and it rang a faint bell but I couldn't remember why. So I looked at the bio page and that gave the "Kavalier and Clay" credit, and then I remembered how you and others were raving about that book on EA. So I held off on chucking the issue into the trash, and I read the story, and -- wow! -- it blew me away. So thanks -- I'm so glad I read that. (For anyone else who still has old NY-ers piled up, it's called "The God of Dark Laughter" in the April 9 issue.) Looking forward to reading this book as well. Excellent review!

He Has Returned! (Reply to this comment)
by Urbanist
Peter ...
Glad to see you posting again! This is a great review, one that I'll forward to a friend that loves both comics and literature.
Of course, knowing what an optimistic guy you are, I was surprised to read of "mature men for whom much of life might lie ahead, but for whom the most interesting moments almost certainly do not." You and I will never be like that, will we? Please say no. Let's strive to be the kind of writers who will always be ready for life to become more interesting than we can imagine.
Cheers

Another prod to read this book (Reply to this comment)

I like Chabon's writing and find him personally very charming, but the book is so long! But between the Pulitzer Prize committee and you, I will have to heft it soon!

Fantastic review, as per your usual, chum.
I love Chabon and I love comic books so I guess I know what I'm spending my income share (snigger) on.
Indispensible stuff, Peter.

I bought this novel as a Christmas present for my daughter's boyfriend, an aspiring illustrator ... after reading your review, I wish I had read it before wrapping it. Here comes another $30 for Amazon ...

So you and your brother (Reply to this comment)

. . . do have some interests in common after all--or is a novel about comic booking as close as you get to his taste?

... your nimble and assured reviewing is clumsy, either. Beautiful writing -- even by your own elevated standards. A pleasure to read. :-)

Droppin' the Recommendation (Reply to this comment)
by repulsemonkey
As a comic book fan, you might appreciate Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth, a recent graphic-novel by Chris Ware, which is an amazingly literate story about a middle-aged man meeting his estranged father for the first time. It makes a great case for comic-books as their own literate art-form, a possibility that Scott McCloud predicted and pleaded for in Understanding Comics.
Beautiful work, Peter, as usual. I may have to seek this one out. Thanks.

An "especially graceful" review..... (Reply to this comment)

..that pulled me in deeply despite my initial predisposition not to consider this subject up my alley.
More to it, it seems, than meets the eye...which presumably is the point of the book.
Very well done, Peter. Interesting pick.

I read Wonder Boys, and didn't like the characters much, but did like Chabon's writing style. This one sounds different and interesting.
