....and amuses me the untold numbers of business types who thought reading and then quoting this little tome would push their careers ahead in the 1980's.
I think I now know why I just took a bath in my mutual funds. My broker has a copy in his office.

Perspective on THE ART OF WAR Is Wrong (Reply to this comment)

Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been billed as a business book for decades. Even more importantly, though, is the fact that The Art of War has been billed as a strategy book for thousands of years.
What you say about war being fought with fixed techniques in Sun Tzu's time is true. However, just as often then as today "Stuff Happens"-- when things go wrong and plans fall apart the ability to make the best of a bad situation and capitalize on unexpected opportunities is timeless.
While The Art of War was written as a text on military strategy, some truths transcend war and apply to many areas. Somewhere in The Art of War it is said if you know yourself you will win half your battles and if you know your enemy you will win half your battles but if you know yourself and your enemy how can you fail? (not exact words, but that's the main idea.) This can be used in business and even in grad school and college.
There's also a chapter dedicated to the employment of secret agents-- business engage in corporate or industrial espionage, and the essence of this chapter can be applied to some aspects of our lives.
My copy of the book is different from the copy Epinions is highlighting. Things like introductions, forewords, appendices, etc. add to the value of the books. Using war strategies in business is foolish, but discovering the higher-level truths from this book for application today is sensible.
