| daperlman's Full Review: Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino |
Las Vegas is constantly changing. But one thing that never changes is the brilliant atmosphere of over indulgence. Gotta love it. These days hotels want to be everything to everyone. Rooms can be as much as $300 for starters at places like the Venetian. If you are like me, the room itself just a place for bags to stay for 3 days.
Location
Centrally located across from Bally's. (Location doesn't get any better than this) Also close to my favorite General Store "The Stage Door Casino."
The Room
The rooms at the Barbary Coast are truly just as nice as a basic room at New York, New York or Bally's. It is, of course older. Coast resorts are owned by Jackie Gaughn (an old timer in the Casino business) Also runs Gold Coast, Gold Spike, and the Orleans. They cost b/t 60-120 per night, depending on the season. As with most rooms in Las Vegas, you will probably have a great view. Hotel does provide free covered parking for guests.
The Food
What is Las Vegas w/out a great meal? I wouldn't know. The Barbary Coast contains 3 restaurants, 2 are the best in the City. You would never guess that a door hidden away in the small corner over by the bar and slots, would lead to a restaurant like Michael's.
This restaurant is about the size of an average living room, there are only 5 or so tables. This experience is first class all the way. From the time you sit down, your every need is attended to by 1 of 4 waiters assigned to you. Some meals take 2 hours to finish as they are several courses. Each with sorbet drowned in Dom Perignon Champagne to cleanse the Palette in between courses. Some common menu items Stone Crab(when in season), Rack of Lamb, and Soufflé. Although this restaurant is really intended for High Rollers, I would recommend trying to get a reservation. Just brace yourself if the meal is not comped the bill will be as memorable as the food. If that is too rich for your blood you take the elevator up one level to Drai's.
Drai's Restaurant is the baby of famous Beverly Hills chef Victor Drai. The cuisine is somewhat French. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is also first class. Some common entrees may include lamb and Duck Confit.
Nightlife
Feel like going dancing? If you do, just stay at Drai's, it becomes the most exclusive night club in Vegas come midnight. You really have to look at this club for yourself, the line for the door looks like a mix between the Emmys and Adult Video awards. In addition to this there is constant funky music playing right in the casino.
As far as shows...go somewhere else. My advice walk a block to Harrah's and catch CookiE Jar and the Crumbs.
Casino Gaming
The Casino isn't much, but it has everything that you would want. Even 3 dollar double deck Blackjack on some nights. The dealers are so-so. My guess is they learn here and then go to a Mirage Resorts casino to make the big bucks. The sports book is good to bet with, but not a good place to watch a game. The drink service is superb. I even had a buddy who threw up right on a gaming table, and they continued to promptly serve him drinks.
What are you missing by staying here
The people that stay here are not as pleasant to look at as the crowd in the RIO or Hard Rock, but this is not a haven for young folks. As I said not a good place to catch a show or hang out at the sports book. The hotel does not have really have suites. No high speed internet access. Some taller folks have complained about layout of room and bathroom.
