Best value I've had in Vegas in years

Written: Mar 18 '02
Pros:Lovely room, convenient location on strip, loose machines, free porno
Cons:weak drinks at the bar
The Bottom Line: Great place for adults and money-conscious.

I have been to Las Vegas over 50 times, and I had never stayed at the Barbary Coast (BC) before and I wish I had. As prices in Vegas have been going through the roof (remember those $15 rooms?), I've resigned myself to stay at the seedier hotels like the Westward Ho (another review in the works). I like to go and gamble, not spend $200 a night for a room I will only sleep in. What I expect is a clean, comfortable, climate-controlled room.

The BC has beautifully appointed Victorian-style rooms. I had a two Queen room for $70 per night and, although the room was somewhat small it was very tastefully done and VERY clean. Climate control worked great and even the towels were huge. I must warn you that they provide free porno channels on the TV, which I thought was great, but if you have kids or you are opposed to that sort of thing, you might not be too happy. I don't know if the porn can be disabled via the front desk.

Room service was terrific and the room always smelled fresh (I smoke) and everything was tucked and folded nicely.

The casino is very small, but had very loose big nickel machines (Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy). I was somewhat disappointed that I had gained several thousand player points yet I have not received any offers via mail from BC.

I do love that it does not take you 1/2 hour of walking to get from your room to the Strip. The rooms are directly above the casino and there are only about 200 rooms, so it's a straight drop to the small casino and you're outside in front of the Bellagio, Bally's, Caesar's, and the Flamingo.

They have a night club that attracts that young (20-somethings) on Friday and Saturday, but I never heard a thing in my room from the club, which was a plus.

I highly recommend the hotel if you're looking for a nice place to stay in a terrific location; however, if you're looking for huge rooms and brand new decor, go elsewhere.
