| CRXLover88's Full Review: Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino |
Located at one of the most famous intersections in Las Vegas, the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino is a true gem in this age of the mega-resorts. The Barbary has only 200 rooms and is located across from Caesar’s Palace, Bally’s and the Bellagio. It is one of the few hotels left that feels like the “old time” Vegas.
There are no long waits at check-in, even though there are only 3 windows. Every employee I encountered there seemed very pleasant and friendly, like they truly enjoyed their jobs. There was never a long wait for an elevator, not more than 15 seconds at the most. One feature I liked was that they have a security guard stationed at night at the elevator entrance. If you didn't have a room key, you never gained access to the room area - made me feel more secure.
The rooms are decorated in a Victorian style (very romantic), with brass beds and curtained canopies, in shades of mauve and gray. The bathroom even had a real stained glass window that actually cranked open; you could yell at the people walking below while in the shower! The heating/cooling system had a thermostat on the wall, not a low-medium-high unit like most other hotels have. The rooms felt like “your home away from home”.
Rooms on the south side are king size beds and face the “dancing waters” fountains at the Bellagio. Rooms on the north side face the Flamingo Hilton, are furnished with queen size beds and have no view.
The casino had friendly dealers, slots and video poker that paid off pretty well, and a good lounge band at night. What they don’t have is a swimming pool, so if you want this amenity, choose another hotel. Barbary Coast is also tied in with the Orleans and the Gold Coast hotels which do have pools, and they operate a shuttle bus every hour, so you can use the pools at these two hotels.
The Barbary Coast also has 3 restaurants; Drai’s and Michael’s are upscale gourmet restaurants so I can’t comment on them. The Victorian Room is the 24 hour restaurant; they have great graveyard specials, $2.95 for breakfast and $13.00 for lobster tails. The breakfast special was great.
The Barbary Coast Hotel is not kid-friendly; so if you plan on bring your children to Las Vegas, the MGM Grand or the Excalibur would be a better choice.
I almost forgot – the room rate can’t be beat for this location on the Strip – it’s about 1/3 the price of any other hotel in this area.
