| msmarques's Full Review: The Beach Chalet |
After spending the day in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, my husband and I had ended up by the ocean.
Light was fading. Despite the slight chill of a November evening, surfers in wet suits were still desperately trying to catch a final wave. We were getting hungry from having spent the day walking.
When we first came upon the Beach Chalet, we weren't sure what to expect. There was lots of free parking (unusual from what we saw in San Francisco), but the building had a municipal park feel, and we didn't expect much more than burgers and sandwiches.
When we entered the building, we saw that the building had beautiful murals from the WPA era (1930s public works projects). On the first floor was a small exhibit about the building and grounds, as well as an information desk.
We headed up the large stairs. Clearly this restaurant was more than a "fast food" park restaurant. The lighting was low and romantic, recorded jazz was playing, and all along the long wall were windows looking out on the ocean.
There was no wait for dinner on a Monday night, but I wouldn't be surprised if this place gets busy on the weekends and in summer.
The menu selection was limited but varied. There were burgers and sandwiches, as we had anticipated, but also fish, seafood, chicken, steak, pork, pasta, and a very limited vegetarian selection. If you enjoy beer and ales, you might want to try the tasting sampler of six ales for $4.50 or seven for $5.25.
I had the salmon, which was good, without being outstanding. My husband enjoyed a burger. We both had California wine.
We had good service, but didn't place any special demands.
We enjoyed the spectacular view, and were pleasantly surprised when a live jazz band began to play later in the evening.
After spending the day walking through Golden Gate Park, enjoying the sunset over the ocean surf at this restaurant was a wonderful way to end the day.
