Maja's Full Review: Barbara Kingsolver - Bean Trees
Barbara Kingsolver does a wonderful job with this book. She brings us the character Taylor Greer, a girl growing up in Kentucky who, like all of us, feels the need to "get out" of our lives for some time to find ourselves. She heads west with plans of stopping when her car runs out of gas, to find herself a mother, quite accidentally.
She ends up in Tuscon, Arizona mother of a child she didn't bear and in the midst of a world she never new existed. Taylor Greer is a tough girl though with a lot of spunk and she knows what she wants and doesn't let anyone get in the way.
We see Taylor shed away her toughness and learn that some parts of the world are not so rosy and wonderful as hers was and some people may be running for their lives and not from their lives. We see Taylor's character change and grow into an adult as she battles with the struggles of her friend's lives and being a mother.
A wonderful novel, beautifully written that touches the heart and reminds us all of what is important in life. We relearn the importance of companionship, sticking together as humans, and appreciating a human for who they are and not what social class, economic background, race, or nationality they are.
