daRealDeal's Full Review: Barbara Kingsolver - The Bean Trees
I read this book in my eleventh grade English class, and I enjoyed it. I did not expect it to interest me. The novel was about a young woman from Appalachia who decides to drive west to Arizona. On her way there, she finds an infant girl, and decides to take care of her. She eventually meets an older woman named Matty, and several minor plot lines help explore the symbiotic relationships of the characters.
One part of the book that interested me was the Spanish story of how people eat in Heaven and in Hell. When I was young, I was told the same story by my mother, who said it was an old Italian fable.
The book is not a heavy read, and thus it is good for those who do not read often or those who wish to start reading as a hobby. And, Like any good book, this novel will leave you wanting more.
