Eddings rises above the rest!!!

Written: Jan 21 '00
Pros:Easy reading for all ages, great story
Cons:Somewhat rough around the edges (though it is his first attempt at fantasy)

Let me start of by saying that I think David Eddings is one of today's better authors. In the book Pawn of Prophesy, the first of what was to become a 10 volume collection, the reader finds characters that are easily identified with. Although set in a fantastical place in a time that has never been seen, most of the underlying plot changes are derived by normal problems and experiences. Garion, the main character in the first five books, begins his life as a young boy on a farm - being raised by his aunt, Pol (short for Polgara). Until his adventures begin he leads a very normal and uneventful life, such as it may be on a farm, that is....

Soon, things begin to change for Garion and his life is destined never again be as it was. Through the challenges that he and his aunt find them selves involved in, he realizes that he is not like the "other kids" and has to learn how to overcome that. Also during his travels, he learns of the world beyond the farm on which he grew up. And, I must say it was a somewhat rude awakening.

While reading the book, I found myself almost fully immersed in the character, as Eddings has a very masterful way of getting into the minds of the characters and helping you feel what they feel. From anger, shame, fear, and uncertainty to love, pride, confidence and self-reliance. All of the "trials and tribulations" of being a teenager are expressed in some form and are dealt with quite eloquently.

All in all I would definitely give this book a "two-thumbs-up ...more if I had them.....). Definitely a great intro to the epic tale between good and bad that spans eons.

p.s. If you do read this book and like it, check out the others in the collection. You definitely won't be disappointed!!!
