The Berenstain Bears
Get in a Fight
by Stan and Jan Berenstain
I am a huge fan of Stan and Jan Berenstains children series about the Berenstain Bear Family. As a little boy I absolutely loved reading the Berenstain Bear books and now that I am older I enjoy reading them to my nieces and nephews. The Bear family is made up of Papa, Mama, Brother and Sister Bear. Stan and Jan focus their books on real life events and problems and how we can overcome them.
Get In A Fight
The book starts out by recounting how a normal morning would be in Bear Country at the Bears home. Brother and Sister Bear would normally get along very well, taking turns in the bathroom, having manners breakfast, and playing together happily.
However, one gray morning it was not that way. As Brother and Sister got up they each sat on the edge of their beds, Sister on the top bunk and Brother on the bottom bunk. This morning brother was not in a good mood and shouted at sister to get her feet out of his face.
As many parents can testify to this started a bad day. Brother and Sister Bear proceed to fight and be volatile throughout the remainder of the day. They fought over the bathroom, they didn't speak to each other at breakfast, and they wouldn't share their toys.
Finally that evening everything exploded Brother and Sister started shouting at each other. Then Papa got mad at started yelling at them to stop shouting. Finally Mama had enough and whistled very loudly. This got the cubs and Papa's attentions.
Mama then proceeded to explain to the cubs that sometimes you get in arguments, but after a while it is over, and you can forget about it. The Cubs then make up as the ending to the book.
My Take:
Get in a Fight is a great book that teaches a simple principle about fighting and holding grudges. It simple shows us and our kids that sometimes you might get in a fight, but you don't need to hold a grudge until the end of the world.
This book is good reading for young kids just starting to learn to read. Also great to read to younger kids as it has fantastic illustrations that kids love. My little 3 year old niece loves to look at the pictures in the Berenstain Bear series.
