Too Much Junk Food – Is it a bad thing?

Written: May 04 '08 (Updated May 04 '08)
Pros:Opens up conversations with your little one regarding junk food!
Cons:None, it's a great little book!
The Bottom Line: This will help you bring up junk food and why eating better is best for your body!

Ah, the perils of too much junk food, or junk food in general. What is it they say, our taste buds are drawn to sweets rather than the good foods that we should eat to nourish our minds and our bodies? I can believe it, sweets always seem to taste so good, even though they are not that good for you!

Teaching our little ones to eat correctly is a tough task when there are so many things advertised on the television trying to temp the kids to eat this sugar loaded cereal with little nutritional value to all of the cool deserts and other items that just are sugared up items that would be nutritious if they took away all of the sweeteners. Or, the chips and dips and all of the crazy fun stuff out there with cool toys that come in the box.

The Story

Healthy foods surround the bear family. But, sister and brother bear are also surrounded by junk food in numerous places like the movies, the mall and even at home. It seemed that the bear cubs were snacking (with junk food) every time mama bear turned around.

Mama thought she noticed the bear cubs were looking a little bit chunkier. So, she started watching more closely. They were looking bigger from the side. Well, even from the back they were looking bigger. That would settle it, they would have to do without the junk food!

She was on a mission to ensure the cubs were getting proper nutrition and snacking all of the time would be only on healthy foods. Mama took away all of the goodies and made sure there were none hiding anywhere. The cubs were so concerned about the goodies being thrown away. But, they were not going in the trash, but rather, into the freezer so they were out of sight and out of mind.

Papa bear was unaware of the changes, but knew when he came in, when mama bear made up her mind, there was no sense in arguing with her because you would not win. That was until he started to reach for a can of his sweetsie-cola. That’s when he found out that he is on the plan for more nutritious eating too!

Shopping brought into the house a wonderful collection of yummy and delicious and nutritious items and a check up, as they ran into their family doctor at the grocery store. There were tons of things to learn about their bodies and what the foods can do to help the cubs grow and how the family can stay healthy by eating good, wholesome foods!

One thing lead to another and the family began a wonderful new chapter in their healthy lifestyle. Check out how things went for the family and I think you will be pleasantly surprise about how this might help your little ones question items they are eating!

Overall Impressions

I am surprised by the questions that my daughter has come up with from reading this book. Normally, after reading the book, we will stop and talk about it and she will ask questions and find out what things mean. With this book, she was actually just questioning the items that she had eaten that day and asked if they were good or bad for her and why. We have had many such conversations since and at least once a day she will ask me about items that she is eating if they have good qualities or if they are junk food.

I enjoy that she is questioning what is going into her body and wondering whether or not it is good and not just taking something, eating it and not worrying about it at all. Mind you, I don’t go all crazy and deny things like sweets or candy in our house. But, we do take it in moderation, don’t make a huge deal out of it and she is doing great with her choices.

I hope to continue with trend and I think this book helps keep that channel of communication open down the road. This is a good book to open up with your child and hopefully, it will open up these conversations for you too! Happy reading!
