The Bigs-Making Your Apartment Smell Like A Gym Before Wii Fit Made It Cool

Written: Sep 26 '08
Pros:Easy to pick up, a lot of fun!
Cons:No online gameplay. No team season feature.
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a great Baseball game that you can pick up and play with your friends, The Bigs is the right game for you!

I bought The Bigs a few months after I got my Wii - basically once I went through Wii Sports and thought I was ready for something a little more advanced. I also decided to buy it because every time I went to my parent's house, my brother was destroying me in this game and I wanted to be able to figure it out so I could show him up... but that's neither here nor there... Make no mistake, The Bigs is much more advanced then Wii Sports Baseball - for example, you can move the people in the outfied, and there are actually people in the stands (opposed to just colored blocks). The Bigs has a variety of modes to play in, some are more fun then others, and overall I'm happy with my purchase (which is why I have it ranked #33 on the top 50 Wii Games).

Overview
The Bigs is a baseball game that utilizes the motion-sensing technology of the Wii in almost every aspect. To throw the ball, you make a throwing motion with your WiiMote (which making a specific shape for different pitches - don't throw a meatball!). To swing your bat, you make a swinging motion with your WiiMote. To make a diving catch, jolt your WiiMote left or right. You get the idea. Work your way through the major leagues as a rookie, or take on your friends in an exhibition game - any way you play, it's a lot of fun!

Game Modes
There are a few different game modes that you can play in - exhibition, home run derby, and rookie challenge - and they each are fun in their own way. The only thing that I think is missing is a season mode, where you can play a whole season as your favourite team. It's not a big deal, but it's something that I wish they would have offered (being that it's a pretty standard mode for sports games). That being said, here are the modes that are offered:

Exhibition
This is a pretty standard mode for all sports games - play with up to three of your friends (so four of you total) as your favourite teams battle it out. You can play 2-on-2 (3-on-1 is not an option), switching up pitching with your teammate every inning. This is a lot of fun to play, and one that you can come back to a lot.

Home Run Derby
This one should be pretty straight forward for you - just try and hit home runs! You can do this by yourself or with a friend, and in either mode you play split-screen trying to reach 10 HRs first. It's entertaining for trying to figure out how to hit, but aside from that, it loses it's appeal quickly.

Rookie Challenge
Create a rookie. Choose a team. Choose your position. Play ball!
In the Rookie Challenge mode, you create your player and work your way through lots of mini-games, gaining attribute points as you go and making your player better. The mini-games range from getting a certain number of RBI's with your rookie to just outright winning a game (and there are a lot of others in between!). One of the interesting things about the rookie challenge is that you have to choose your starting pitcher every game, and their stamina decreases after every game. This teaches people the importance of pitching rotations. Overall, this is definitely the mode to play if you are playing by yourself. There is also a co-op option, but I haven't tried it out...

Big Play Meter
One of the fun things about The Bigs is the Big Play Meter, which basically grows with everything you do (single, double, triple, homerun, stolen base, strikeout, great catch, double play, etc.). When you get to 100,000 points, you have the option to activate it (by pressing Z and C at the same time). You can do this either as the pitcher or batter. As a batter, you will hit a guaranteed homerun (if you connect with the ball, that is). As a pitcher, you have a bigger sweet-spot area (so you will throw a perfect pitch), and your pitches come screaming in (100+ MPH). It adds an interesting mix to the game. Unfortunately, when you are on the other side of the activated big play, you know you're in trouble. Definitely fun though.

Controls
The controls are pretty straight forward, it requires that you have a Nunchuk plugged into your WiiMote, and the majority of the action is picked up with the WiiMote. You pitch and bat with the WiiMote, and make your players sprint by shaking the WiiMote and Nunchuk up and down (think running arms). To throw to a base, you press whichever base you want to throw to on the D-Pad (right is first, up is second, etc.). To slide, you swing your WiiMote to the ground while pressing A. Overall, the controls for The Bigs are very good!

Graphics
The graphics are pretty good, and 2KSports did a good job of nailing each stadium. The shape of the characters are basically the only thing that bugs me - not every baseball player in real life is jacked beyond belief! They do not all have the V-shaped body of muscular swimmers! But in The Bigs, David Ortiz does... This, however, doesn't have anything to do with the graphics. The non-essential graphics are pretty good too - you can see the people in the stands, but they are not so detailed that they are taking away from the performance of the game. In terms of Wii graphics, The Bigs does a great job.

Soundtrack
The music is constantly changing in the background, and that is a great feature. There are enough songs that I do not feel like I am constantly listening to the same one, but at the same time it doesn't feel like I could just turn on The Bigs in the background of a party instead of setting up a playlist. The commentators have usual phrases of sports games, and they do a good job of filling in when need be (saying something when someone is coming up to the plate, etc.). The soundtrack is as follows:
Killing Joke - Millenium | Midnight Oil - Dreamworld | Primus - Jerry Was a Race Car Driver | Rollins Band - Tearing | Stone Temple Pilots - Plush | Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You | Stooges - Down On The Street | Fu Manchu - Hung Out To Dry | Blue October - Somebody | Anxious Me - Robot | Motorhead - Ace Of Spades | Anxious Me - Moustache Enthusiast | Satellite Party - Insanity Rains | White Zombie - More Human Than Human | Jane's Addiction - Ocean Size | Highbench - Satisfied

Online Gameplay A huge downside of The Bigs is that there is NO online gameplay available, so if you want to play with your friends, you have to do it locally.

Overall Overall, The Bigs is a lot of fun, either by yourself through Rookie Challenge, or playing with your friends through an Exhibition game. The lack of a team-season is frustrating (although not deal breaking), and the lack of online capability is disappointing (but once again, not deal breaking). If you are looking for a fun baseball game, The Bigs is the game for you!
