Pros: smoother skin, pleasant smell, little goes a long way
Cons: expensive, may not noticeably make freckles lighter
The Bottom Line: If you have the money to spend, I recommend buying this to get smoother, brighter skin, but don't expect miracles to happen with your freckles.

Why I Tried this Product
I have been using the Body Shop's Brightening Serum for almost one year. I tried it because the Body Shop claims that "with regular use, [it] will help counteract skin discoloration and freckles" (www.bodyshop.com). I am thirty and have healthy, clear skin, but I am of Irish descent and am covered in freckles and have some sun damage as well. The damage I have looks like darker skin (freckle colored) that covers a larger area than a freckle. I bought it hoping it would lighten the freckles and sun damage I have.
What I Think So Far
Lightening
After a year of using it, I am not 100% sure if it actually lightened my freckles and sun damage. Because I did not do any kind of scientific measurements or take photos, I cannot be sure, but I do feel like they show up less. I stopped using it for three weeks in December and it seemed like my freckles got darker. I also noticed that I seemed to have more freckles. Who knows if that was truly due to discontinuing use of the serum, but it seemed like good proof to me.
Skin Condition
What I did notice right away is how smooth my skin is. My pores are small to begin with, but the area around my nose had some that were noticeable. They are invisible now. I also used to have some redness around my nose and on my forehead and that's completely gone now. I think that my complexion is overall brightened and more consistent. I used to use an exfoliator once a week, but I never feel like I need to now after using the serum. It's actually pretty amazing to me how smooth it is. My husband even commented that my skin looked brighter and clearer.
Use
I use this with my regular SPF moisturizer. I apply it right after washing my face. I wait for it to dry (about 60 seconds) and then follow up with my SPF 30 moisturizer. I asked the girl at the Body Shop how to apply if you use a daily moisturizer and this is what she suggested. I only use this once a day in the morning. The Body Shop's website suggests using it morning and night. Perhaps I would find better results if I followed this regimen, but my skin is too dry to wash twice a day. If you try it twice a day, let me know if you see a difference!
Further comments
I was hesitant to purchase this serum since it's expensive at $36/ 1.5 oz bottle. BUT - it lasted almost one year! I only need to use one squirt (although, like I said, I only use it once a day).
It comes in a white, opaque, glass bottle with a pump dispenser. There is a small clear cap to prevent accidental pumpage. I do find that the cap falls off if I pack it in a bag. The label says to store it in cool, dark place. Also, avoid your eye area.
The scent is very light and does not interfere with any other scents you may want to wear. I am very sensitive to smelly stuff but this does not bother me at all.
