| serc's Full Review: The Body Shop Facial Brush |
When I placed an order of Body Shop products in March, I wanted to get a good facial cleanser. I chose their Vitamin C Hydrating Facial Cleanser, and when I placed the order, my consultant suggested adding on a The Body Shop Facial Brush. It was only about $5.00, so I thought I'd give it a try - and that turned out to be a great decision!
The Body Shop's Facial Brush is a small brush designed to exfoliate and smooth your face and stimulate circulation while you clean your skin. It is only about 4 inches long and is made up of a clear acrylic handle, and a round set of soft bristles. There is a short white loop of rope on the end from which you can hang the brush for storage. It also comes with a clear plastic cover over the bristles, which pops off easily. While I wouldn't store the brush with this cover on, I will keep it on hand to cover the brush if I take it while traveling. A small information tag is also attached to the brush; it is removed.
The instructions on the information tag read "Use with The Body Shop facial washes and cleansers." That is a bit unclear, so I'll tell you what I do with my facial brush. First I apply some cleanser to my face and massage it into my skin for a moment. Next I get the facial brush wet with warm water and I use that to massage my face for about 2 minutes. Then I rinse my face off, use toner, and apply a moisturizer. The facial brush is easy to use in this way and it feels great.
I have been very pleased with the results of using the facial brush. The skin on my cheeks has always been somewhat rough and dry. My guess is that this is rosecea, although I don't know for sure. I do know that exfoliating my cheeks with a facial mask has improved them temporarily in the past, but I rarely find time to use a mask. Incorporating the brush into my nighttime routine has caused my cheeks to be so much smoother I can't believe it.
The cleaning instructions that come with the brush say to rinse it and then air dry it after use. I have been doing that, and it is very easy to accomplish. However, this is where I have a concern with the facial brush; the bristles on my brush are already quite discolored with makeup and dirt from my face. I wish there were a way to clean the brush more thoroughly so that I'm not rubbing old dirt, oils, and makeup into my skin. Possibly I should be cleansing my skin and then using the brush, although that is not what the instructions imply.
Storing the facial brush is easy; it is small enough that it doesn't take up much space. It can be hung on its rope in your bathroom somewhere (maybe in the shower), or just placed on the counter. I actually put mine in a basket that sits in my bathroom, so that air can circulate around it. Again, storing the brush with the plastic cap that comes with it right after using it would not be a great idea as it could lead to the formation of mold on the product.
The Body Shop's Facial Brush costs $5.50 and can be purchased at brick and mortar The Body Shop stores, online at www.thebodyshop.com, or through an independent The Body Shop at Home consultant.
A special reason that I like to shop through The Body Shop is that they are a socially responsible company. They do not test their products on animals, they have a stated commitment to human rights and the environment, and they participate in Community Trade ("fair trade" as opposed to "free trade") in acquiring ingredients for their products.
Despite my concern about cleaning this brush, I must say that I have been delighted with the results I've had using it. It is not only easy to use but it feels wonderful while I use it... and my skin is softer and smoother, too. Plus the price is very reasonable and the brush is durable enough to last a long time. 4 stars.
