I've tried a heap of exfoliants, not to mention skin care products, and in my search for a good exfoliant with no pore clogging ingredients, I came across Japanese Washing Grains.
They sound good, look organic and natural, and only contain one ingredient which is Adzuki Beans - definately no harsh chemicals or other comodogenic ingredients!
What are Washing Grains
These Washing Grains are ground Adzuki Beans, commonly used in Japanese Traditional skin care products to exfoliate the skin. The Beans are finely ground to a soft powder form. The grains are of mixed consistency, some very fine and light, and some larger grainier parts.
How to use the Washing Grains
There are 2 ways you can use the washing grains:
1. mix with a little bit of water and scrub onto your face. This is the best method if you really want to scrub your face clean. It is not scratchy but definately leaves your face soft. Use once every 2-3 days. It may irritate your skin if you use it every day using this method.
2. The second method is to mix it with your normal cleanser. This works best with gel or cream cleansers, not the foaming ones, although it will still work with foaming cleansers. This is a much gentler way to exfoliate your skin and you can use this once a day every day. You can barely feel the grains when mixed with a cleanser, and it still does leave your skin feeling soft and exfoliated.
But they said it was harsh?
I was abit turned off by some reviews which said this was a very harsh exfoliant, and it made me think twice about purchasing the grains. But I am glad I did! If you find it too harsh for your skin type, mix it with your cleanser. Just a pinch of the grains.
The secret it is the way you exfoliate
In my early days of exfoliating I used to scrub and scrub away until my skin turned red and irritated. But I have since learnt my lesson. A beauty website said you should treat your facial skin with care, and exfoliate in small circles very gently, as if you were exfoliating a butterfly's wing! Well you get the idea. You can still get the same result, without the redness by putting much less pressure and very lightly rubbing the grains over your face.
Finally...
I am still using the washing grains and will probably never switch to another exfoliator. It does the job well, is fairly cheap as it lasts a long time, and I never have to worry about chemicals and other ingredients clogging my pores and causing breakouts!
