| serc's Full Review: The Body Shop Satsuma Shimmer Lip Balm |
I have a lot of lip products in my house; some I love, some I don't even like. I was given a set of several lip balms from The Body Shop in varying flavors about 6 months ago. While I don't love it, The Body Shop Born Lippy Satsuma Shimmer Lip Balm is my favorite of the three.
Description
This lip balm, like all of the Born Lippy products, comes in a small round plastic pot. The pot is constructed of clear plastic, through which you can see the color of the lip balm, and it features a cap that screws off. It's very easy to use, but I have come to really dislike pots of lip balm. Dipping a (potentially dirty) finger into a moist product and then putting it onto lips - practically on the mucous membranes in the mouth - isn't a great idea. Always wash your hands before you use a product like this, especially with seasonal and H1N1 influenzas going around. I keep this product at home and use it exclusively there so as to avoid inadvertently exposing myself to germs.
The lip balm itself is a very soft substance; usually I think of lip balms as being hard and waxy, but this is way too soft to be in a tube. It isn't particularly waxy, either. It seems more like a slightly waxy, soft gloss. The color is a medium orange and there is a hint of shimmer in it. The fantastic Satsuma (bright, citrus-y orange) scent is a prominent feature of this lip balm.
Use and Experience
When I do use this, I like to apply it over a lipstick. This balm does offer a slight, peachy tint with the shimmer, but for me that's not enough pigment; I need color to keep from looking washed out and ill. After my lipstick is on (usually something neutral like MAC's Twig), I wash my hands and then dip my finger into the pot. Taking a bit of it onto my finger, I apply it over my lips. It is very easy and it goes on smoothly.
When applied over lipstick, I find that this looks very pretty. I like the shimmer and the tiny bit of peachy tint that it adds. The balm does wear off after about 2 hours (and it will wear off faster if you drink or eat anything). I find this is about average for this type of product.
The scent is noticeable after it is applied, but it's not so strong that I'd worry about it clashing with another fragrance. That being said, if you don't like citrus scents or don't want to have one right under your nose, you won't like this! The scent does linger for a bit, maybe 20 minutes, but it fades after that.
I like this product, but I don't love it. I really dislike the application method, but I like the shimmer and scent well enough that it doesn't deter me from using it sometimes. It's never going to be my first choice of lip product, but I do think it's a good product.
Cost and Where to Buy
The Body Shop products can be purchased at brick and mortar The Body Shop stores, as well as online at www.thebodyshop.com. The regular retail price for a single pot of this lip balm is $8.00. That's pretty expensive. The balms are currently on sale, 2 for $12.00, though, which is a bit more reasonable. For people who like this type of balm, this could be a nice addition to their Christmas stocking.
The Body Shop is a great place to shop, not just for their products, but also because of their philosophy. I like that they state that they are against animal testing and therefore their products aren't tested on animals. I also appreciate that I can easily recycle the packaging of their products when I'm done with them. They also participate in Community Trade ("fair trade" rather than just "free trade") when they purchase ingredients to create their products. It's nice to feel good about what I buy!
Ingredients List: Ricinus Communis (Castor Seed) Oil, Lanolin, Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax, Beeswax, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Flavor, Limonene, Silica, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Citral, Citrus Reticulata (Satsuma) Oil, Tocopherol, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Yellow 5 Lake, Iron Oxides, Red 7 Lake.
The Body Shop Born Lippy Satsuma Shimmer Lip Balm smells great and adds a nice shimmer to lips. I dislike the method of application, though, and find the regular retail price to be a bit outlandish. 3 stars.
