| kmennie's Full Review: The Body Shop Watermelon Self Tan Lotion |
With its usual smugness, The Body Shop has 'sourced' various exotic oils for its self-tanner from remote areas of the world in some sort of 'ethical trade' idea that allows it to continue on with the idea that buying lots of smelly things for your bathroom will contribute to a better world. This would be far less irritating if there was any point to the unctuousness that is its 'watermelon' fake'n'bake...
Few people require so much moisturizing, and those who do are better served by lotions designed for the purpose, not by a self-tanner that just happens to have a great deal of grease in it. The texture makes for a somewhat awkward application: it's smooth, so it slides all over quite quickly, but don't count on getting dressed or otherwise moving afterwards -- it doesn't dry. Facial application is a no-go for what are probably obvious reasons. The sole use I found for this product was at-beach application, with sunblock. There is a sand-stick problem there, but it does do a decent job of alleviating post-sun-exposure dryness.
Still, I found it irritating enough to send it where all of my bathroom oddments go to die: off to the slightly less fussy hands of K.M. Mennie the Younger. The colour result is nice, but nothing so great that it made the formulation tolerable.
The Body Shop's would-be watermelon (the smell is somewhat nauseating, reminiscent not of watermelon but of artificial flavouring and chemicals) self-tanner has the distinction of being the only product within memory that didn't pass muster with either myself or my sister. The high grease content just makes it a no-go. I wish I could say that it would at least be suitable for exceptionally dry skins, but the poor choices of oils mean it also makes a somewhat poor moisturizer.
