The Book of Mormon
The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture comparable to the Bible. It is not however a sequel to or part of the actual Bible. It is the history of the people on the American Continent written by ancient Prophets, and serves as another testament of Jesus Christ. Its compilation is also similar to the Bible, it was written by many different prophets, and their writings are divided into 15 different books which are the contents of The Book of Mormon.
The story starts in Jerusalem in about 600 B.C. with a prophet named Lehi and his family. The Lord commanded Lehi and his family to leave Jerusalem and travel into the wilderness. They traveled in the wilderness for many years, eventually crossing the great waters until they arrived in the promised land, or as we know it the Continent of America.
Lehi's family consisted of four boys, Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi. Laman and Lemuel rebelled against their father and did not keep the commandments of the Lord. Nephi and Sam were obedient to their father and the Lord.
After they had been in the promised land for several years Lehi died and Nephi became the next prophet because of his obedience. However, because of this Laman and Lemuel were jealous and wanted to kill Nephi, so Nephi took those who were willing to follow him and the Lord, and they traveled further into the mainland. They then established themselves as a people know as the Nephites. Laman and Lemuel remained where they were with those who followed them and were known as Lamanites.
The remainder of the Book of Mormon is written by decedents of Nephi. They relate the history of these two groups of people, their wars, and contentions. Also contained in the writings of these prophets is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The prophets teach and testify of Jesus Christ as the savior of the world.
One of the most wonderful stories contained in the Book of Mormon is found in the third book of Nephi. It relates the visitation of the resurrected Christ to the Americas. He shows the people there the wounds from the nails in His hands and feet. He heals their sick and afflicted. And he also expounds His gospel to them.
The Book of Mormon also has a short history, contained in the Book of Ether, of another people know as the Jaredites. These people came to the American Continent through the guidance of the Lord during the time of the Tower of Babel. The Book of Ether tells there history as they went from being righteous to being wicked many times. Finally they became so wicked that they fought a war among themselves that totally eliminated that people from the face of the earth.
The Nephites and the Lamanites also became totally wicked other then a few people. They began to have continuous wars until the Lamanites had completely killed all of the Nephites.
Moroni was the last prophet to write in the Book of Mormon. He lived during this time of great war. Before he died he buried the plates in a hill, that they might come forth in our day according to the purposes of the Lord.
In 1823 Moroni appeared as a resurrected being to Joseph Smith. He told Joseph of the ancient record, and said that God was calling upon him, Joseph, to translate it into English. Joseph did translate it through the power of God into English that all might read it.
The Book of Mormon contains a challenge and promise to all men, that if they will read the Book of Mormon with an open heart, ponder the contents of it, and ask God if it is true, they will come to the knowledge of its truthfulness by the power of the Holy Ghost.
I have read the Book of Mormon many times. I have learned so much about Christ and his teachings. I have put this challenge to the test, and have come to the knowledge that the Book of Mormon is true.
One of my favorite scriptures is in the Second Book of Nephi chapter 25 verse 26. It reads, "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
The Prophets in the Book of Mormon truly did write of Christ. And the Book of Mormon truly is another Testament of Jesus Christ.
