| j-dizzle's Full Review: The Book of Mormon Books |
The Book of Mormon claims to be another testament of Jesus Christ. It is a record of Gods dealings with the people that lived on the ancient Americas. It is considered by its believers as another book of scripture comparable to the Bible. However, it is not a sequel, and contains hundreds of different stories that create an environment of enlightenment for its readers. These stories were authored by inspired men known as prophets. Just as the Bible, these prophets prophesied of Jesus Christs visit to the earth, and helped one and all understand the importance of Jesuss teachings. It is a compilation of 15 different books, which are the contents of The Book of Mormon.
The story begins over in Jerusalem around 600 B.C. with a prophet named Lehi and his family. In comparison to the Bible, this was during the time when Jerimiah began prophesying of the destruction of Jerusalem. The Lord commanded Lehi and his family to leave Jerusalem for their safety. They traveled deep into the wilderness and were guided by God for many years. They eventually crossed the great waters until they arrived to what they knew as The promised land, or as we know it the American Continent.
Lehi had four boys that are often referred to in the Book of Mormon. Nephi and Samuel were very obedient to the counsel that came from their father, and spent much time learning about the prophesies of this one Jesus Christ. The other two sons, Lamen and Lemuel, were very much different and ended up in rebellion against their father and the Lords teachings.
After they had been in the promised land for several years Lehi died. Because of Nephis diligence, he became the successor of his father, the next prophet. However, because of this Laman and Lemuel became jealous and sought after Nephis life. Nephi took those who were willing to follow him and the Lord, and traveled further into the mainland. They then established themselves as a people known as the Nephites. Laman and Lemuel remained where they were and their followers became known as Lamanites. These two civilizations battle with each other for hundreds of years until the Nephites were destroyed.
The Book of Mormon was written on gold plates, preserved, passed down and documented by the decedents of Nephi. They relate the history of these two groups of people, their wars, and contentions. Also, most importantly contained in the records of these prophets is the gospel of Jesus Christ. These prophets taught and testified of Jesus Christs role as the savior and redeemer of the world. In the sixth chapter of the first book of Nephi, he proclaims, For the fullness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham and be saved. Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world. This statement is consistently the underlining message of each of the Book of Mormon prophets.
One of the most significant stories contained in the Book of Mormon is found in the third book of Nephi. It gives an account of the visitation from the resurrected Christ to the Americas. He shows the astonished people the wounds from the nails in His hands and feet. He calls forth the sick and afflicted and miraculously heals each of them. After all had gone forth, Christ proclaimed his gospel and established his doctrine.
After a couple hundred years of righteousness, the Nephites also became wicked like unto the Lamanites. They began to have continuous wars, which resulted in the destruction of the Nephite nation.
Moroni was the last prophet to write in the Book of Mormon. He lived during this time of great war. Before he died, he buried the gold plates in a hill in the North-Eastern part of the American continent. This was done so that they might come forth in our day according to the purposes of the Lord.
In 1823 Moroni appeared as a resurrected being to a modern-day prophet named Joseph Smith, who was also the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He told Joseph of the ancient record, and said that God was calling upon him to translate it into the English language. The record was written in reformed Egyptian, and Joseph Smith translated it through the power of God that all might benefit from its contents.
The Book of Mormon contains a challenge and promise to all men, that if they will read the Book of Mormon with an open heart, ponder its contents, and ask God if it is true, they will come to the knowledge of its truthfulness by the power of the Holy Ghost.
I have read the Book of Mormon Many times and have personally taken this challenge with real intent. I cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned of Christ and his teachings from my study of this special book. The Bible is inspired scripture and has taught me so much about the mission of the Savior. In such a confused world, using these two books hand-in-hand has allowed me to discover the truthfulness of Christs gospel. Im not going to say that life is easy, but I can honestly say that I am happier, and that I find greater strength to deal with lifes common adversities.
Bottom line - his book is either true or its not. Unfortunately this debate cannot be collectively solved, you are either reading the Word of God, or you are reading a very creative book. Regardless, I recommend the book, for the fact that it is enjoyable to read. Its fascinating to read about these people on the ancient Americas. Also, I would recommend it for the fact that until you give it a shot, you really dont have a legitimate stand on whether it is scripture or fraud. Its a lot like the young child that says he hates broccoli when hes never even given it a try.
Take the opportunity to find out for yourself of whether the Book of Mormon is truth, or fiction?
