VLenard's Full Review: The Boy Is Mine by The Architechs/Monica/Brandy
Monica Arnold, a teen sensation, is a great artist with a very talented voice. I bought her album because of "Angel of Mine" which is a great song. Let’s start off with a little background.
Back in 1995, a teen diva, only 15, stormed on the scene with the notorious radio jam "Don't Take It Personal," from the album 'Miss Thang' and continued to overwhelm her strong fan base with such hits as "Like This & Like That," "Before You Walk Out Of My Life," and "Why I Love You So Much." Two years later in 1997, Monica, out of nowhere, hit us with a #1 hit from the Michael Jordan/Looney Tunes based film "Space Jam" called "For You I Will" and contributed to the great success of the soundtrack. Nearly a year later, in 1998, both Monica and friend Brandy, also an R&B diva whom had not released an album since around the same time as Monica, blasted audiences with their long running #1 single "The Boy Is Mine" in which won the two a Grammy! Monica went on to release her well-anticipated 2nd LP in which was titled after the recent #1 single. From 'The Boy Is Mine' LP, Monica collected such hits as the two #1 singles "The First Night" and "Angel of Mine," and also the foreign released hits "Inside" and "Street Symphony." Currently appearing in "I've Got To Have It" and "I've Still Got To Have It," the first single from the Martin Lawrence film's soundtrack "Big Momma's House," Monica has also taken up modeling and acting in such films as the recent "Boys and Girls" and starring in the future films "Angel of Mine" and "Love Song" (based on the film "Love Story") which is also starring Nsync's Justin Timberlake as Monica's love interest. It's been quite a road for Monica. With two hit albums, a new single in October 2000, and a new album in 2001, Monica has established her name in the music industry and has also proved herself as an artist, model, actress, and role model to many kids hoping to make it in the music business and to those who wish to have a successful career. She has built and even stronger fan base, but she says that she does not want to be around forever, or "overstay her welcome," as she put it, and she says she is limiting herself to 10 albums. From her church to stardom, from her sassy attitude to her sexy sophistication, Monica has wowed us all, and all without letting it go to her head.
Each song has a certain pizzazz, of course I have a favorite lyric for each! I’m in such a writing mood today! Let’s begin!
1. Street Symphony / 5:36
Has a classical sound to it. I’d love to do my homework with it. The song has a "make you feel smart" tune to it. Listening to it over and over, it’s basically about Monica saying that she wants someone that she loves off the streets. It’s a very sweet song from a very sweet girl.
2. The Boy Is Mine (duet with Brandy) / 4: 50
The famous duo song about a two girls fighting over a guy. In the end, the guy gets it. Ha. I love this song because my friend and I had a similar fight. We realized that fighting over a guy isn’t worth out friendship. It’s the same in the song.
3. Ring Da Bell / 4:23
This is not one of my most favorite songs, but it has a great, amazing, slow beat. It’s nice to slow dance to and just swaying back and forth. I love every song on the CD, but this would be on the bottom part. I don’t think it’s as great as the others.
4. The First Night / 3:55
A great song with a great beat. I like the video, it’s just awesome. Enough said.
5. Misty Blue / 4:21
Sounds like an olden time song. Aretha Franklin- like. But a great slow song and I would love to slow dance with my special guy with.
6. Angel Of Mine / 4:10
My all-time favorite song, it’s so sweet. I know every single word to this song. It’s the all time best slow dancing song.
7. Gone Be Fine (featuring OutKast) / 4:17
Monica and OutKast are so complimentary, it's amazing. If she made this a single, it would have been a major hit. Appealing to both hardcore Monica and OutKast fans.
8. Inside / 4:11
This song brings tears to my eyes and makes me smile. It reminds me of the situation that I'm in. Inside, I'm crying baby. I miss him...
9. Take Him Back / 4:27
Another love gone wrong song. Monica is famous for these types of songs. Her voice provides a soothing therapy for me and you.
10. Right Here Waiting (featuring 112) / 4:29
Starts out very melodic and calm. This song makes me really want to cry out oceans of tears. If you listen to the words you know how it is. It sounds as if it's a reincarnation of a classic.
11. ‘Cross The Room / 3:51
This is a nice uplift. A party song, but yet again about two lovers. I think it's a love song undercover, hiding underneath a fast pace.
12. I Keep It To Myself / 4:25
Smooth flowing romance song. Sway back and forth, close your eyes, you feel as if Monica is singing directly to you. It's a great feeling.
13. For You I Will / 4:54
This is the first song I ever knew by heart. Drama Club. I sung it in front of the entire class. Monica has been a big inspiration ever since then. This is a great love song to sing to your better half.
