The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls
Written By: Valorie Lee Schaefer
Illustrated By: Norm Bendell
Recommended reading level: Ages 9-12
When I first started volunteering with teens my oldest daughter was a toddler. She accompanied us on youth outings, and admired many of the girls. I will say that at that point in time the furthest thought from my mind was the reality she would reach preteen/teenhood and we?d share THE puberty talks. Looking at her now I am thankful that I ? Mom ? was the first to discuss these issues with her. I realize 2.5 years has passed since she and I sat down for the initial discussion of puberty/sexuality issues.
One of the books I provided her with - The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls - continues to be a source of information to her. I have read the entire book also and highly recommend it for girl?s 9-12 years of age (possibly 8 year olds). Chelsea was 8.5 when she took ownership of this publication.
This comprehensive book covers issues relevant to preteen/teenage girls and their bodies. It really is a head-to-toe guide, and I know several other Mother?s that have provided their daughter(s) with a copy. I was impressed with the initial read and amazed that the content covered subject matter I would never have thought to tell my child about (not because of subject matter, merely because I just wouldn?t have thought of it).
Inclusion of information such as the four types of bras ? training, underwire, soft cup, sports ? and explanations of the style will assist your child prior to the shopping adventure. The illustrations show girls in fitting rooms with a bra and shorts/skirts/pants on. Some of the girls have their moms with them. This helps your daughter understand and accept the events of the excursion.
Content touches on emotional well being, and provides some great guides for girls. Suggestions toward being kind to others, and toward self-acceptance are included.
Total body care is addressed. From teeth care ? brushing, flossing ? to hair care, and cleansing of the body? your daughter will read lots of great information. The importance of sun care is discussed, and issues like pierced ears are presented. I feel that the Face section does a wonderful job of explaining skincare, the why?s, and the how?s.
Issues such as B.O., underarm air, leg hair, and shaving technique are talked about. This book includes a section that talks about the 5 stages of breast development and allows girls to realize the changes occurring. The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls discusses the variety of breast shape, color and size? and communicates with regard to the emotional aspects of being ?flat chested? or ?too busty.?
The section with regard to menstrual periods is in-depth. From explanation of body change, signs of period, supplies for it, to the detailed description of how to insert a tampon? this book provides the information that girls need. They will also read about PMS, emotions, ways to combat cramps, and other pertinent information.
Exercise, Eating, and Rest is also discussed. Girls receive wise information from a resource that they feel comfortable reading. The water color drawings are well done, soothing to the eye, yet add a teen appreciated compliment to text content.
